The base is a hard plastic which should be filled with sand or water. The pole is attached with heavy-duty screws and the pole itself is made of heavy metal. The assembly was extremely easy and the quality of the bag is excellent. In all the time I have had it, I haven't had any issues.
I will say, if you are a larger man or just someone with a considerable amount of strength behind you, this might not be the best choice, but it certainly works for your average at-home boxing needs.
One big comment is that suggest go out and buy washers for all bolts as well as some Loctite to secure the 3 bolts in the pipe base and the other 2 bolts at the base of the spring. All the bolts vibrate and back out. Initially it seemed like every 10mins or so the bolts would get loose. With the washers and Loctite it's been 2 weeks and nothing has loosened up. I think a lot of the reviews saying this bag broke is because it was hit with loose bolts. Probably don't want to use Loctite on the bottom 4 base bolts because it may make it hard to get to the base fill cap if ever need to drain the base.
Great bag with about $8 of mods.
Update after 1 year:
This bag is great. Anyone who ever gets mad should have one. One issue recently is we moved the bag to to a room with hardwood floors. I was too nervous to leave it full of water so emptied the water and added sand. What a terrible design to fill with sand! If anyone has to fill this base with sand plan on 2 people (with one that can lift 200lbs), tilting and rolling the base a lot, a good funnel, and 2hrs if filling with 150lbs (100lbs was not enough for me). BUY POOL FILTER SAND.The sand needs to be DRY and small. Wet sand will make you hate life. Good luck - stick with water if at all possible.
It happens to also be the most important piece. The pole that allows the bag to be adjusted. It's hollow plastic!!! It literally renders useless the ability to adjust the height. It buckled on me in 3 days.
The only way this is usable now, is on the shortest setting. Not ideal for a 6'1" man. EDIT: Now it isn't usable on its shortest setting, because like the picture in the main review (one star), the pole holding the bag snapped right off. Hopefully everlast replaces this sooner than later.
The odd part, is this pole connects to another pole that is solid metal! Why couldn't this piece also be?
