Editorial Reviews

Evan Moffic has stepped up the listening skills needed by the Jewish community to the voice of the Christian community. How has he done this? By going to the very source of the Christian faith -- to Jesus himself, the Jewish teacher of Galilee in the 1st Century. Moffic has accepted the challenge of seeking to explain Jesus as one who is best understood by understanding him as a Jewish teacher rooted in the Tanakh and the Jewish traditions. Christians will not all agree with everything Moffic says, but they will say he has listened well. For that alone I am immensely grateful for this book.
--Scot McKnight, Author of The Jesus Creed and Julius R. Mantey Professor of New Testament, Northern Seminary, Lombard, Illinois

Rabbi Moffic is something of a prophet. At every turn-be in an examination of Our Father, the foundational Christian prayer, or a probing of the Shema, the foundational Jewish prayer-Moffic peels back layers of insight. He connects dots not before seen."
--Chicago Tribune

The Jesus I grew up with was intelligent and wise, compassionate and kind. But it took adulthood for me to understand he was also Jewish. That revelation opened a world of insight I'd before missed. As I grew to know the real Jesus--a Jewish Jesus--my faith developed fresh depth and life. If you have a passion for learning, if you enjoy the stretch of good dialogue and aren't afraid of venturing into new territory, pull up a chair. I have two rabbis I want you to meet.
--Michele Cushatt, author of Undone: A Story of Making Peace With An Unexpected Life

"You have made a most cogent case for the Jewishness of Jesus and made him even more accessible for both Christians and Jews."
--Rabbi Samuel Karff, Former President of the Central Conference of American Rabbis

Thank you, Rabbi Moffic!  As a Christian and a Catholic priest, I am grateful for the intriguing look into the Jewish life of Jesus.  As such, this book is a wonderful gift to Christians who seek to further the rich faith and culture out of which Jesus emerged.
--Rev Tom Hurley, Pastor, Old St. Patrick's Church, Chicago, Illinois

Rabbi Moffic draws from Jewish wisdom in a way accessible to all of us. His insights as a rabbi speak generously to a multi-faith world."
--Eugene H. Peterson, author of The Message and Professor Emeritus of Spiritual Theology, Regent College

More people need to understand the power of prayer. Rabbi Moffic has given us a generous guide to unlocking the power of our words -- to God, ourselves, and each other."
--Jeff Goins, Author, Wrecked: When a Broken World Slams into Your Comfortable Life

As the book makes clear, much of what Jesus taught is already part of an authentically Jewish conversation. Accessible and powerful, this book is a valuable contribution to inter-religious understanding.
--Publishers Weekly

From the Author

few years ago, following a lecture I gave at a local church, a student confessed to me that she wished she had been born a Jew so she could know what Jesus experienced. Moved by her words, I asked her what--aside from being reborn in a different era--could help her gain that knowledge. She said, "A real understanding of Jesus's life as a Jew."

This book is the result of that conversation. It is a result of thousands of hours spent in learning and conversations with devoted Jews and Christians who care about growing in faith and knowledge.

For followers of Jesus, I hope seeing Jesus's life as a Jew opens up new ways of appreciating and growing closer to him. I hope it helps Christians move beyond the simple understanding of Jesus as a ticket to heaven to Jesus as a way of living within a tradition and relating to others. I hope it helps Jews move beyond a simple association of Jesus with anti-Semitism to Jesus as a teacher of Judaism. I also hope it creates new encounters with God and with one another.
