About the Author
Caroline Blakemore began her thirty-year teaching career as the director/teacher of her own private school. A school reading specialist and educational consultant on emergent literacy, she has worked with readers of all ages. Her work with hundreds of students led her to research the reasons why some students learn to read early and effortlessly - and others don't. Her investigation led her to write Every Word Counts (formerly Baby Read-Aloud Basics). Blakemore has authored a number of articles and has served as adjunct faculty at California State University San Marcos. Her popular workshops for educators as well as parents of newborns focus on the importance of starting a reading routine from birth. Blakemore also co-authored (with Barbara Weston) Literacy Centers for The Primary Classroom, for teachers. Her website continues to offer parents new information and strategies to encourage language and literacy development in children from birth. Blakemore is a graduate of University of Michigan and holds a Masters from University of California at Berkeley. Her many certificates and credentials include a certificate in Reading Recovery (the highest and most rigorous level of training for reading specialists), a language development specialist credential, and preschool director and Montessori training. She has received several recognition awards in language arts from the San Diego County of Education. She was recognized as the Teacher of the Year from her school district, and was one of ten Teachers of the Year from San Diego County. She lives with her husband and dog Annie, in a house full of books and artwork near her two sons, daughter-in-laws and five grandchildren in Southern California.

I love this book! All parents should read this. It is more than just about reading to your child. It is about how reading to the child develops the child’s intelligence, memory, language, cognitive function, and attention span. Daily reading to the young child, in the womb, and after birth, forms life long intelligence for the brain as it is developing. Books are suggested for each stage of development or even making your own simple books is an option.
I watched my sister reading to her two children every night before bedtime for years. One of her children is now in Grad school for her PhD as a Neurobiologist. I do believe that the reading was a great influence for her life!
One of my friends is going to move to be near his grandchildren who are under 5 years old. He will be spending time with them every day. I bought him this book right away, as I wanted him to spend time with them reading, now that I know how important this is for their whole being.
I was not read to as a child, and after reading this, I wish my mom and dad had read this book, and read to me as I was growing up.
Buy this book and give it to any parents with young children or “parents to be”. You will be happy you did!!
