Praise for Every Young Man’s Battle

“Every Young Man’s Battle does the best job I have ever seen on the subject
of sexual temptation. Once upon a time we lived in a world that didn’t talk
about secrets, and that world has brought us to the mess we are in today.
Young men must have an honest, blunt, and unashamedly Christian look
at their sexuality. This book will save thousands of future marriages.”
—Jim Burns, president, YouthBuilders

“I have never read a book as direct and open as Every Young Man’s Battle.
The profound principles communicate the authors’ personal experiences
and provide the hope that anyone can overcome a day-to-day battle with
impure thoughts. Every Young Man’s Battle helps you see the importance of
taking control over your eyes, your mind, and your heart so that you can
completely honor God in every facet of your life.”
—Scott Bullard, of musical recording group Soul Focus

“It’s encouraging to see some real men stand up and sound the alarm to
young men. Stephen, Fred, and Mike’s courage to tell their stories exposes
what has unfortunately become a dirty little secret among men in the
church. The battle cry of the day is for men of all ages to live a pure and
holy life, and this book will crush Satan’s strategy by giving the troops the
guts to talk about what has been taboo in the church for so long. The
authors’ poignant stories paint a picture of battle in which all men can
relate and offer hope and camaraderie to win the war.”
—Troy Vanliere, artist/manager (representing NewSong,
Carolyn Arends, Soul Focus, Jadyn Strand, and Glad)

“There has been a gaping void in the search for holiness, and Every Young
Man’s Battle addresses those issues where others have been comfortably
silent. If there is even a spark of desire for purity in your life, this book will
kindle that fire… It is possible to walk in victory, as you will surely find out
after reading the Every Man series.”
—Matt Butler, of musical recording group NewSong

From the Inside Flap

In this world you?re surrounded by sexual images that open the door to temptation. They?re everywhere?on TV, billboards, magazines, music, the internet?and so easy to access that it sometimes feels impossible to escape their clutches. Yet God expects his children to be sexually pure. So how can you survive the relentless battle against temptation? Here?s powerful ammunition.

Steve Arterburn and Fred Stoeker, the authors of the hard-hitting best-seller Every Man?s Battle, now focus on the temptations young single Christian men like you face every day?and they offer workable, biblical strategies for achieving sexual purity.

The authors examine the standard of Ephesians 5:3??there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality??in a positive and sensitive light. And they explain how an authentic, vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ is the key to victory over temptation. Every Young Man?s Battle will show you how to train your eyes and your mind, how to clean up your thought life, and how to develop a realistic battle plan for remaining pure in today?s sexually soaked culture. As a result, you?ll experience hope?real hope?for living a strong, pure life God?s way --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

While containing helpful strategies and ideas, unfortunately the writers drag your mind through the gutter as they graphically discuss accounts of sexual discovery. One teenager I disciple recently told me this book actually caused him to stumble more, since it put new ideas in his mind! Parents and youth leaders should carefully screen this book because it can do more do more harm than good for certain teens.

A healthy alternative that contains an even stronger biblical basis, that avoids the graphic descriptions, and that is much shorter (making it much more likely for teens to read it) is Joshua Harris' "Not Even A Hint: Guarding Your Heart Against Lust." This book is based on the truth of Ephesians 5:3. It has also been re-released as "Sex is Not the Problem, Lust Is." I have led several teenage guys in studies of it and all have found it very beneficial in honoring the Lord in the area of their sexuality.

I first bought this book when I was in college and going through a great deal of sexual temptation and sin with my then-girlfriend. I'm in a much better place in life now, and am working hard to make my relationship with God my focus, and a conduit for developing a relationship with a future wife. As such, I flipped through Every Young Man's Battle again to see if there was any insight that could apply to my life now, and I soon came to a realization about this book: I hate it. What's more, in hindsight I can see that it caused me more frustration and confusion in my college days than I would have endured without it.

While some of the principles presented are true and wise in regard to pornography, lust, and addiction, such as their progressive, habitual, and destructive natures, these statements become lost in an overwhelming tirade that forms the majority of the book. A vast amount of the content is contradictory, dehumanizing of both men and women, hyperbolic, and ultimately damning of any form of sexuality.

Where to begin?

This book is contradictory in both the ultimate point the authors make (save yourself for marriage) and how to get there (shield yourself from lust). They repeatedly emphasize that lust often begins as something small that progresses - which is true - then go on to give graphic accounts of such instances in an almost titillating fashion. Most of these are detailed retellings of sexual experiences or encounters by either the authors or guest writers, from start to finish. They are trying to emphasize their points by being blunt, but there is a difference between bluntness and explicitness that they clearly missed.

This book is poison. I have to characterize it that way because it is so crude and unnecessarily graphic in places that I can't possibly recommend that someone read it despite it containing some kernels of truth and good advice. It's inappropriate for a man of any age. And I write this not as someone who is unexposed to the world, but rather as an attorney who has represented rapists, child abusers and molesters. This book is simply no respite from the endless drumbeat of depraved sexuality in culture, and it is a disgusting and gratuitous sexuality at that. For instance, did the author need to tell us how he learned about masturbation? And how to do it? Including lubricant? Also, did the author need to burden us by telling us by name who his favorite centerfold was? (I keep asking myself--what if that woman is/becomes a Christian? Why has he perpetuated her shame for others to read?) The graphic nature of the text is unbelievably bad. Truly awful. Toward the end of the book there are some kernels of truth, but the balance of the book is so outrageous and unbiblical in its graphic depictions that I could never, ever recommend that a Christian or non-Christian alike read this book. The authors have a lot of emotional and spiritual growing up to do before they put books like this in the marketplace. I won't project bad intentions onto the authors, but I will categorically say that their execution is an epic spiritual fail. Mothers, and even fathers, may think that this is the 'strong medicine' that needs to be administered to sons who are caught up in pornography or sexual activity. It is not. This is not the only way to communicate with a young person.Read more ›

This book was a big disappointment. My sons have seen things online that I wish they hadn't, they know more than I wish they did, however this books contains graphic details that would trigger sexual sin for probably just about anyone. I was actually hoping they could read it for themselves. As a woman who does not have a lot of struggle with lust, I found this book prompting thoughts and fantasy that were challenging my own purity. I would not recommend this book to anyone. If you are considering it for someone, especially someone struggling with lust, etc--please review it first.

Arterburn & Stoeker do an excellent job of talking straight to the single male. Though the book is entitled Every Young Man's Battle this book deals with the very real sexual struggles of every man that is single. I would highly recommend this book to all men ages, High School on up.
The book finally gives straight talk on the issues of masturbation, soft porn, the wandering eyes, and the issues of lust in our culture. In a world where sexual images and humor crowd our airwaves from radio to television this is a needed tool to stay the battle.
This is not just a book on staying pure, but one that gives real resons for trying to do so. Testimonies of men who have struggled, fallen, and then regained their purity are given throughout this book.
I would encourage every man to read this book, and encourage you to buy extras to share with others who may also be struggling to remain pure.
