Wang provides a view into the digital economy based on a business, investor, and economic perspective. There is little to no hype in this book. Instead, Wang defines digital giants as Data Driven Digital Networks or DDDN’s. A DDDN is “any business that captures, harnesses, and deploys insights from massive amounts of data, often provided for ‘free’ by a large network of users.” (p3.). The DDDN concept is useful and a good way to think about companies like Google, Amazon, etc.
Wang’s contention is that these DDDN’s are in the process of dominating and dismembering pre-digital value chains. The result is a series of duopolies in key industries with two DDDN’s controlling – not the industry – but the value chain. This is an interesting perspective and one the author uses throughout the book. At the beginning of the book, the author talks about those influencing the debate. This book is most like Scott Galloway’s book, The Four, which like this book is a recommended read.
Everybody Wants to Rule the World is a tightly made argument. Wang covers the following chapters in under 200 pages, with examples spread throughout:

Strengths of Everybody Wants to Rule the World
The book is clear in its premise about DDDN’s, Duopolies, and the dismembering and reintegration of value chains. The idea that DDDN’s do not compete head-to-head but rather compete to get data and control their networks is interesting. These ideas are covered in the first three chapters of the book.
The book draws on a range of insight, experiences and people living in the digital world. Wang leverages his personal and professional network to bring insights that are broad and helpful.
The illustrations and data provided help highlight the book’s arguments and main points without dominating the discussions. They bring just enough insight without getting in the way or driving hype.
Challenges with Everybody Wants to Rule the World
Questions where details would be helpful are largely absent from the book. For example, how you Build a DDDN? Is limited to the following advice: get a lot of users, apply analytics and new technology, use the technology to draw insight and intelligence from the data, keep a long term view on investment. All accurate and helpful advice, but a worked example would have been more helpful.
Wang does provide hypothetical examples for different industries and joint ventures in the Partner or be Punished chapter. The illustrations of cloud provider, IT service providers or industry associations driving networks are helpful. The challenge is that they follow a similar pattern – each party puts in a couple of hundred million dollars, others would be compelled to join because of FOMO, and you would monetize the data to rule the world. More detail or a single detailed worked example would have been made this good book, even better.
