This was a great, easy read that made biking accessible to more than just your everyday riders. I work with staff to help them get around without getting in a car, and this was a win all around. Great work!

Everyday Bicycling is not a book about bicycle racing or the latest technology. Nor is it a tribute to bicycling "experts," who are often the same people intent on leading their followers down the rabbit hole of high-speed, high-tech madness. This is an idea book for people who think riding a bike might be a fun and humane way of getting around. It covers the basics. It also includes the voices of others on the same journey, people I imagine would be a pleasure to ride with. If you've ridden a bicycle for several years, you probably don't need this book. If so, buy it for your friends. At a minimum, they'll gain some insight into the possibilities of your favorite vehicle. And they might just give themselves permission to join you on the road. We can all benefit from their company.

This is an informal, winsome introduction to bicycling for the beginner. The author recounts her beginning years with bicycling, and the various trial-and-errors that she made whilst learning better skills and techniques. EVERYDAY BICYCLING is aimed at the cyclist who is new to the sport, or who perhaps has not biked in a long time. There are lots of fun, encouraging ideas to try.

I suspect serious road or mountain bikers won't find this book very helpful, but for others, it has a lot of good ideas. Here's some of the highlights:

♦ Extensive discussion on the various types of storage
♦ Good discussion on the various safety issues--especially on how to avoid getting hit by car doors, and where in the lane to ride.
♦ Helpful discussion of different equipment that can be used when you're using your bike to haul things.
I've been biking only a few years, so I was able to benefit from several of the author's tips.
♦ Funny illustrations. Check out the custom/hand made storage bike 'buckets" that you can make.
♦ Thanks for pointing out the several different kickstands that are made. My original "Schwinn" kickstand keeps bending; I thought I had no other alternative.

√ All in all, a fun, easy read with good ideas. Recommend!

And yes, it's true. The author was given a free TV, and she toted it home on her bike!

I actually bought and read the book and it made me feel better about using the road - or sidewalk if I felt safer. Not dying is primary over arriving at my destination faster than walking.

Breezy read that gives one the sense of what it's like to integrate the bike as a transportation item into your day. The author covers a lot in a relatively short read. The advice about riding 4' to the left of parked cars is something I will take to heart as I learn to "be traffic", as the author phrases it. Good book.
