Each section is laid out simply and you don’t have to read for hours to get anywhere. This book will lead you down the path to mindfulness that will increase your awareness of the many aspects of your life. I was gifted a copy by the author and I started reading it on a United flight coming home from a recent trip to Savannah. I’m using the book to explore why I want to move to Savannah from California and what changes I will have to make to reach that dream.
My favorite quote from this book comes from the Introduction: “Practicing mindfulness will lead you to the depths of self-awareness”. So many people live a superficial life. They move from one situation to another like a robot and they never know or feel the depths of their soul. When you die you want your tombstone to read “I was self-aware and paid attention to everything” rather than “I paid attention to nothing and never knew who I really was”. Reading and using this book to practice mindfulness will take you on a journey to really know yourself and the result is an amazing journey that ends with you saying “I was self-aware and I paid attention to everything”.
This book contains a total of 108 exercises designed to help you develop a mindfulness practice and integrate mindfulness into your daily life. The book divides its exercises into six sections: Physical, Emotional, Rational, Spiritual, Occupation, and Network. That means there are a total of 18 daily exercises in each section, touching on everything from addressing anxieties to cultivating gratitude and much more.
I have read many books on mindfulness and while they all share a similar purpose, they each have a slightly different prescription for achieving mindfulness goals. This book is different in several ways. For one, it includes daily exercises for 108 days as opposed to the more generic advice that other books offer. Having 108 different, specific exercises is good because it provides an exact activity to complete each day and, once finished, an individual should notice a difference in the way they perceive the world and themselves.
Another difference with this book is the reflections on each activity. After you complete each exercise, you are asked anywhere from two to six questions about the exercise. What I like is that the reflection questions are different for each exercise. I have read other mindfulness books that asked exactly the same questions for different activities. It was like filling in data on a spreadsheet and it felt far too mechanical. These reflective questions are better because they are tailored to the actual activity. And I greatly appreciate that this mindfulness guide doesn’t continuously recommend breathing and meditation exercises! I have read other mindfulness guides that offered pretty much the same advice each day, centering every activity around breathing and meditating. This guide is much different and the activities are more varied. This book aims to integrate mindfulness into most everything you do, so it easily goes above and beyond other books on the topic.
Learning to stop and smell the roses is important and Everyday Mindfulness is a good guide for bringing mindfulness more fully into your life. It’s more of a workbook than a reading book and it is intended to get marked up as you complete each day and answer the questions. With the fast- paced lives that most of us lead, we could all use more mindfulness and this book is highly useful for accomplishing its intended goals.
This book is well written, takes complex concepts and applies them to your lives. It is obvious that Melissa Steginus, as a coach and wellness specialist, has listened and actually heard many clients through the years.
I am a Spiritual Counselor who also worked in Addiction and Family Counseling. There's one thing I know for sure and that is we've all tried to "fix ourselves" and not suceeded. That's why I asked you how is your life working right now? Well chin up my friends! We didn't get here overnight, and we can't fix it overnight.
However, we can take the hand offered to us by way of this wonderful book. Melissa will walk with you step by step through a process of learning mindfullness, allowing us to be aware and full experience each moment of our lives. Throughout this process, you will be able to empower yourself and others. When you do this, you will create the really meaningful changes you want to make.
