"Everyone Poops by Taro Gomi is part biology textbook, part sociological treatise and all celebration of a very natural process. Both my daughters begged me to read the book over and over again. They marveled at the enormity of the elephant's poop and searched with the skill of a scientist for the tiny specks which represent bug poop. The text is simple and straightforward but not without humor.

From Publishers Weekly
Okay, so everyone does it--does everyone have to talk about it? True, kids at a certain stage of development may find the subject riveting--but their parents may well not want to read to them about it. Here we learn that birds do it, bees do it, kids with bended knees do it. We are told about big poop and little poop, animals that poop while moving and animals that poop from a stationary position, why and where people poop--in short, we get the scoop on poop. The pictures, far from Gomi's best work, leave nothing to the imagination either. In case the message hasn't sunk in, the final spread presents a chorus line of creatures, backsides forward, each producing poop. Call it what you will, by euphemism or by expletive, poop by any name seems an unsuitable picture book subject--a view not helped by this artless presentation. Ages 18 mos.-4 yrs.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1-- Well yes, they do, but does anyone really need an entire book on the subject? In this Japanese import, readers are informed on page one that "an elephant makes a big poop, a mouse makes a tiny poop." Later on, they are told that it comes in different shapes, colors, and smells, and that, depending on who is doing it, it is done in different places. The summarizing statement is that "all living things eat, so everyone poops." However, there is never any explanation offered as to why. Overall, the text is merely a series of rather dull pictures of back ends of people on toilets and animals, with captions identifying them and occasionally posing questions such as "What does a whale's poop look like?" (No answer is provided.) There is even a little joke: "A one hump camel makes a one hump poop. And a two hump camel makes a two hump poop. Just kidding." I wish I were. --Denise L. "...a great accompaniment to potty training. Young people need to accept their bodily functions, and if happy and colorful books like this help the cause, then I am all for it." - --Kaboose

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.
While we enjoyed the book, we spent the extra money on the turtleback school edition, only to receive it and have pages stuck together by some sort of glue. We now have two pages that are ruined, and for a $19 book, it is super disappointing. We could have saved ourselves the extra money and just let our toddler destroy it, which we were trying to avoid.

I’ve known about and liked this book for a long time. It’s cute, entertaining, and educational. Finally made the jump and got it for my 3yo who’s been strongly resisting pooping in the potty. Literally within 48 hours she’s willingly pooped in the potty. I’ve been trying for months. Bribery didn’t work, “poop party” didn’t work. This ridiculous little book worked.

So this book is wonderful for potty training, especially if you have an animal lover! Our son is fascinated by it, and points out all the different animals and their poops. Beautiful artwork and simple, clear language that allows you to elaborate if you want (or not...) The only issue: my husband, a scientist and an artist, was annoyed that the snake and the whale only had questions, but no poop. They poop too! So he researched it and added his own accurate depictions to each animal. Solved the confusion, but we wish the author had thought to add that too. In any case, a good book to have on hand in your child's bathroom.

Just received this book for my almost 17 month old twins (boy/girl). I know they're a bit young but my daughter has recently started taking off her diaper at nap time and has flooded her crib twice (thank goodness no poop!!!) Her brother more playfully tries to take his off, but she is expressing interest in starting to train or seeking attention. Either way its a great time to start learning. We got some books and videos and 2 potty chairs (gonna have to replace BOTH potty chairs but those are different reviews) they had very little interest in the other books, but were fascinated with this. My son was especially interested in the page that shows men and boys from adult to baby all pooping. I think he put together in his head a bit more what happens when he poops in his diaper. He loved the whole book but was especially fascinated seeing a human poop.
I have to respectfully disagree with the librarian about this not being appropriate or necessary etc. Not sure exactly how she worded it. Its a completely NATURAL bodily function and I think the attitude that it is a dirty little secret (well ok its dirty, lol) is exactly why kids think poop and farts are funny. Its treated by people with that attitude as something naughty.
Well I for one (not sure if librarian is a parent) am praying that I am not one of those parents who wake to find their child has removed diaper and smeared the poop all over their crib, walls, selves etc. I want them to fully understand what poop is and where it goes. This requires SEEING POOP. I thank the author for writing this and it gets an A+ in this house!

Bought this for a two year old (not yet potty trained or training) who seems to like to hold her poop. Think it's starting to help- she loves saying 'everyone eats so everyone poops' haha. She asks to have this read to her & reads herself. More expensive then other books but it's a classic & worth it. Hopefully this will be a book we can read once we start the potty training process real soon.

Bought this for my 2 1/2 year old nephew. It was a bit of a joke, a bit of wishful thinking. He had stopped using the bathroom regularly for bowel movements, and would cry whenever he did. After a reading the book 2 or 3 times, my brother said they would reference the book, and he started going normally again. Not saying it will be helpful to everyone, but my nephew still likes it 7 months later, and helped him. He thinks it's funny.

This is my 2 1/2 year old niece’s favorite book. Her parents are sick of reading it to her, but it’s the only thing she wants to hear right now. It helped with the potty training, but I think her parents have mixed feelings at the moment, especially after reading it 2 or 3 times a day for weeks.

I bought 5 books for my daughter who just under two when I started Potty training. "Time to pee" by Mo Willems - the author of Knuffle Bunny, "Princess Potty" by Samantha Berger, "Potty Animals" by Hope Vestergaard, "Potty" by Leslie Patricelli, and "Everyone Poops" by Taro Gomi. Everyone poops is her favorite one!
She frequently brings it to me and asks me to read it to her. Its got a lot of interesting animals for her to look at, but also its one of the most simply written books which is nice when are you potty training someone who just turned two. Also the pictures are pretty graphic and its very easy to understand the concepts. One page has a picture of a toddler sitting on the Potty with poop coming out of her butt. Funny, but I think the visual aid really helps in aiding comprehension of the story.
Her second favorite book is "Potty" by Patricelli, which is also simply written. My advice - if you're potty training a younger kid stick with this book and "Potty". If you're potty training a 3 or 4 year old they might be bored by these. In that case I recommend Potty Animals! Hilarious.
If you're looking for a book to give tips on Potty Training I recommend Early Start Potty Training by Linda Sonna. Very helpful.

It's a poo book to help children understand that everyone poops and that you don't need to be ashamed of having to poo.
But it's poorly put together I find, it has silly things like "What does a whale poop look like?" but never goes further than that.. Basically leaves more questions than answers for little minds.
