This is a great book! I picked it up and learned a lot about the history of candles, which really intrigued me. When she talks about how they were used for warmth, light, and fragrance in the time before electricity, I was enriched with a deeper knowledge of candles. I was also intrigued when she talked about their spiritual/religious significance and how they are viewed by various religions. I have always wondered about that sort of thing.
The recipes/directions for making different kinds of candles (rolled, tapers, pillars, containers, etc) is pretty clear. She also gives you tips on some common tools that you need (skewers for puncturing air bubbles, lollipop sticks for immobilizing the wicks, etc) and how she gets them very cheaply (She shops second hand stores, garage sales, and discount stores for most of her supplies!).
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is a beginner all the way through novice (she has a lot of tricks for making the most complex things with her candles).
I thought I was getting a book that would teach me " how to " , instead I get EVRYTHING Mythos about candles, and EVERYTHING Religious about Candles, and EVERYTHING but How to get started and how to best make a soy wax candle, tips and tricks that ACTUALLY WORK. If you're sick and tired of wasting money on waxes and wicks, then don't buy this book!!! It doesn't help not one bit.
(*THIS IS A LESSON ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF INVOICES packaged with an order):
NO PROBLEMS here...just mentioning how a lot of vendors lately aren't sending them (invoices) with your books...Gratefully, this place DOES SEND AN INVOICE with your shipment!!
I really like to have the invoice on hand for "quick reference/contact... just in case." IF I need to reach the vendor IF there is a problem with my order...then you can do it immediately!
Getting back to the book: It's like a BIG cookbook for candles with all the details explained...including kinds & uses for Religious ceremonies, etc. and other's made for looks or for scents...it's all in there...like a stew, lol! It also has the history of candle making inside as well! Good stuff!
I like the book a lot...It reminds me of another book called..."Everything u wanted to know about "?" (...I won't say it)...But were afraid to ask!" lol! I haven't yet had the opportunity to make the candles yet, because I'm disabled and need a friend to come over & give me a hand with the making some of the candles. In the meantime, I'm finding myself reading the book, as I would a cookbook before I decide to cook anything!
Overall it seems to be an excellent book, even though I haven't had the opportunity to make any candles yet, I do not foresee any problems! I'll eventually make the candles & become a pro, I hope to make the scented soy candles or beeswax (kinds of waxes used), from votive's (in size), to great big ones with the 3 wicks, as well as the tapers! (*I have to say though, I have NOT seen the "SOY" candle making in THIS book yet...only the usual kinds of paraffin & bees-wax.) Then, I hope to sell them!
