John Joseph developed his philosophy that “everything is a gift” through his grandather Pepe. Holding onto to this teaching is what carried John Joseph through some very difficult times, especially his stint as a medic in Viet Nam. It was through this experience, and his work afterward as a volunteer in a free clinic that John Joseph discovered the existence of a secret compound, deep into the woods of Olympic National Park in Washington State. Hearing that this camp harbored Viet Nam vets that couldn’t face the world after they returned from the war, John Joseph made it a priority to investigate it, and help if needed. Hiking several miles deep into the heavily-forested area, John Joseph arrives at the almost hidden camp. Seeing these vets, and what was happening with them, he knew what had to be done.
I'm so glad that John Joseph and Richard Glaubman came together to give us this gift of a personal story of how one man was able to cope with his life's challenges, as well as find his place among us.
