While the current trend toward branding may work for large corporations, it can be costly and not worth the expense for smaller businesses. "Everything You Know About Marketing Is Wrong" debunks such common marketing myths. It focuses instead on how-tos for waking up and engaging prospects by discovering and addressing their real needs. North offers practical and specific advice for leveraging what we’re already doing and improving the results – making more money for the same time and money invested.
I recommend this book for entrepreneurs who want a sound plan for attracting eager, qualified prospects who can, and will, benefit from their service and gladly pay for it.
I do recommend it :)
He presents today's marketing approach according to his "steps" -- but it's more commonly known as content marketing. No new ideas or concepts are presented, but that's okay since his combination of techniques make a good system that most anyone would get good results from IF you do the work.
John also walks a fine line all throughout the book of being an educator and evangelist of his own online marketing products and services. He tends to educate first and then offers the relevant URL as a resource to refer to, but this book is clearly about driving his business - which I think is fine since his systems look solid.
The only thing I take issue with is that he presents several core concepts of copywriting as being easy to do with his formulaic templates from his system. As a working copywritter and content marketer, I know that it's not quite that easy. Figuring out your Big Idea and the messaging platform to make it irresistible is difficult. But starting from proven copy templates and baseline structure is better than "winging it," so I think he's actually doing a good service in the end.
I think this book would bring the most value to small business owners and people wanting to understand how a new business should go to market - both online and offline.
