Editorial Reviews

Donny Hathaway would have been 65 years old on October 1,2010. Although the passing of this visionary and multi-talented artist left a significant void, his pervasive influence leaves an indelible mark on popular music. Donny's genius as a vocalist, pianist, composer and arranger was evident in his ability to combine his unparalleled musical gifts with a deep spirituality that permeated all of his endeavors.

There could be no better standard bearer for Hathaway's work than tenor saxophon'ist Kirk whalum, whose work has similarly crossed the boundaries between R&B, gospel and jazz with an emotional immediacy that is beyond compare. Everything is Everything consummates the chart-topping For You and The Babyface Songbook to create a trilogy that brilliantly exhibit Kirk's singular interpretive skills, and further advances the career of this 8-time Grammy nominee.

Highlights include "You Had To Know," featuring a headelt perfomance by Donny's daughter, Lalah, and neo-soul crooner Musiq Soulchild's retro take on "We're Still Friends." Wonderful arrangements by Gil Goldstein and John Stoddart, with contributions from contemporary jazz masters Rick Braun, Jeff Golub and Christian McBride, as well as pedal steel scorcher Robert Randolph, come together with Whalum's passionate tenor to tell the musical story of one of the most important figures in polular music.

What can I say this brilliant piece of work from my man Kirk Whalum for doing a special tribute to the great Donny Hathaway which took me away by surprise. Listening to the Tribute disc would pour your soul, your mind, your spirit all inside of you. My main man Donny Hathway would be very happy for Kirk Whalum and others doing his songs which he's known best for. There's no sloppiness, no overturned or no turndowns or anything happening right here on this album. Listening to tracks like Love, Love, Love with him and Rick Braun was a great music beauty to collide the remake with a smooth jazz punch to it! As with others like We Still Friends from soul brother Musiq Soulchild, Valdez in the Country with Jeff Golub, A Song for You, plus a special treat of You Had to Know with the lovely daughter of the singer, Lalah Hathaway. Beautiful arrangements still live from the horns, strings and the rhythm section. Still love it!

Goes on by saying this is the best tribute album I ever listen to in my entire life non-stop. This is real music you cannot miss asides what's playing in the radio or on MTV, BET and stuff.

Greatly miss Donny a whole lot. Wish he was here today rockin' on!

Kirk Whalum takes on one of the great songbooks, the works of Donny Hathaway. Hathaway was one of the most brilliant songwriters and singers of the 1970's, who though labeled a soul singer, partly for his work with Roberta Flack, regularly transcended that label. This record takes some of his standards and Whalum and friends give them loving and vigorous workouts.

Standouts include Valdez in the Country featuring guitarist Jeff Golub, a wicked take on Tryin' Times with sacred steel great Robert Randolph that brings out the honker in Whalum and wicked chops from Randolph. You Had To Know is a beautiful tune featuring Donny Hathaway's daughter Lalah that aches with tenderness.

The playing is spot on, never overplayed,if anything the playing is occasionally understated. All in all a very satisfying workout, and its great to hear someone take on these songs again. If you like smooth jazz, this is a keeper

I love this CD. Kirk manages to channel some of that classic sound worthy of a tribute to the legend. To have the daughter of the great Donny Hathaway, Lalah Hathaway, is a treat. Would have loved to hear more of her on a couple more tracks.

Kirk Whalum (as usual) presented and performed Mr. Hathway's music in a way New School or Old School collectors can appreciate. Did not get to see Donny Hathaway perform, but I have seen Kirk Whalum twice. I recommend this one. Even if you are not familiar with The Late Donny Hathaway.

OMG, Kirk Whalum has honored Donny Hathaway with this CD. Of course Lalah Hathaway's vocals added even more to this wonderful CD. The song selection are some of Donny Hathaway's best ( I miss him ). Kirk Whalum has given us a little of him back.

Accurately captures that "Early '70's"-feel. In times past, if I wanted to listen to Side 2 of an LP after having listened to Side 1, I judged the LP as a great one; this CD can likewise be enjoyed all the way through with no "letdowns." The "soul" of both Mr. Hathaway and Mr. Whalum come through. It's effortless listening -- it neither grates on your nerves nor trades "substance" for "style." It's a "go-to"-music gift. "Bravo," Mr. Whalum!
