What I like most about the book is the basic music theory and scales. The standard tabs are helpful too. My copy came with the cd which is an added help.
This book is packed with exercises to aid in not having to look at the strings and fretboard when picking. This book helped me get more comfortable with scales. The Mechanics of a Bend was good also. I am looking to learn more about the blues scales and leads. This book has helped me understand that much better.
Will it make you a guitar player? Probably not. But it has helped me learn more than just the basics. There is a load of information that could be beneficial for the entry level guitarist to the novice who needs more than just basics.
I'd buy it again.
The focus is on theory --the chords, scales, progressions-- that relate to guitar playing in general. In addition, there is information about the blues chord progressions and scales that are fundamental to rock and blues guitar. And it goes into some detail--how to bend strings, etc. It is nicely laid out. The typography is easier on the eyes than the Hal Leonard theory books. So, if you're starting out, this is a good choice.
However, three quarters of this book duplicates what most other theory and method books have in them, and the parts relating to blues and rock are at an introductory level. The examples of chord progressions and lead licks are all generic, and there are no transcriptions from existing songs (unless I missed something). So, it's not a book that specializes in Blues and Rock.
I strongly suggest taking the book to your local FedEx Office shop and have it spiral bound. It costs about $6 and makes a huge difference in how you will use it.
Go slowly. Spend some time with this book and many musical notions will fall into place.
