Editorial Reviews
2016 release. Everything's Beautiful brings Miles Davis' sound into the 21st century, blending a diverse group of master takes and outtakes from across Miles' incredible tenure with Columbia Records (1955-1985) with original reinterpretations. Robert Glasper produced the collaboration. "I didn't want to do just a remix record," Glasper noted when discussing the 11-song set. "My idea was to show how Miles inspired people to make new art." Knowing that "Miles didn't have one audience," Glasper recruited a legion of diverse guest artists to add to the magic of the project including familiar collaborators like R&B musicians Erykah Badu, Ledisi, Bilal and KING. They are joined by British soul singer-songwriter Laura Mvula; hip-hop producer Rashad Smith; Grammy-nominated Australian neo-soul quartet Hiatus Kaiyote, rapper/producer Illa J; jazz guitarist John Scofield, who collaborated with Davis; and the legendary Stevie Wonder.

The 11 songs on this album are as varied as the artists Robert asked to join him Erykah Badu, Bilial, Stevie Wonder , Ledisi and KING to name a few. Now I'll be the first to tell you that I can only take so much of this Atmospheric jazz stuff (sometimes it can be a little bit much) I mean with the rap poetry , the echoes of sounds and voices and the this, that and the other......believe me when I say that I get it when people say that they don't "get" this album but I would suggest to these folks to go ahead and give this album another listen because everything on here just works well together . This review is for the Amazon exclusive (red vinyl) record. The album is a beautiful solid red color with a blue label, there are no lyrics or pictures inside only liner notes and the album cover opens up.
The opening track "talking s***" is named appropriately because that's exactly what Miles is doing TALKING S*** through samples of course as the music plays. Track four "Maiysha (so long) is a 7:29 bossa extravaganza ! Oh yeah I have to mention track two side B "song for selim" featuring KING, now this is one of those atmospheric songs but with less congestion, and finally jumping ahead to the final two songs track 10 and 11 "I'm leaving you" feat. Ledisi & John Scofield has more of an R&B flavour to it and it's one of my favorites , as for closing this set with "right on brotha" feat. Stevie Wonder I do say that Robert Glasper made the right choice it's one of those "night songs" you know the kind where you can just observe the city's lights and dwelling. 🎺🎶🎿🎷🎵🎼🎻
Glasper and his collaborators use outtakes and in-between-takes patter as their basis for creative reinvention. “The Ghetto Walk” first appeared in “The Complete In A Silent Way Session(Mosaic.)“ Bob Belden expresses his conjecture that Teo Macro edited this Feb. 20, ’69 session to be included in the “On The Corner” album. “Talking Shit,” “ Ghetto Walkin’,” and “They Can’t Hold Me Down” flows seamlessly. Notwithstanding powerful R&B protest songs, they are comfortable to our ears. “Maisha” is published as a song in the “Get Up With It” album during Miles’ seclusion. Miles put this song into a repertoire of his Japan tour in ’75, and became one of my favorites. Erykah Badu interprets this into a light-touched bossa nova. Miles’ trumpet blends smoothly into the new soundscape. Glasper’s keyboard dances lively. However, there remains a feeling of something-taken-off-too-much. In addition to latin flavor, the song also has weird, magics-religious taste. Miles’ organ sent out occult atmosphere with no thought for the audience around him. Mark Randall correctly points out this. He criticizes Glasper overemphasizes mood at the expense of everything else in his disc review on Jazz Times.(June, ’16) Glasper and crew might have their hearts in the right place, however, their tribute to Miles feels much lighter. Enigmatic Miles towers before them as much deeper, fathomless, and mercurially unpredictable existence.
On the whole, the album is brimming with sunny R&B grooves, silky soul, hip-hop thunder and jazz lightning. Glasper leaves some trucks as much as chosen musician’s inspiration develops. On “Violet,” Evans’ clear tones are sinking leisurely into the bottom of the lake, where rapping bubbles erupt incessantly. Hiatus Kaiyote depicts silent lake’s bottom scenery. Ending part of “Little Church” goes together with the mood of “Violet.” A persistently repeated phrase is the foundation of “Silence Is The Way.” Programmed “Milestones” is close to, and at the same time, remote from the original. Glasper’s ostinato bridges two opposite worlds. John Scofield and Stevie Wonder save the project becoming a stale one. Glasper finds a rhythm in Miles’ simple phrase of ‘wait a minute’ and feels so much swag in his saying. “I’m Leaving You” is build upon this findings, and uplifted with R&B flavor. Scofield’s guitar is a linchpin of this track. On “Right On Brotha” Stevie begins harmonica solo with playing the theme from “Nefertiti.” His sound go strait to our heart. Because of Stevie, this song becomes the best track in this album. Miles would thumb up to him.

This particular recording left me scratching my head. It's well-played, but nothing really jumps out, and I don't really get much of the "Miles" element. Not sure what the intention was here, but it just did not work for me.
From what I've heard from the newer CD, maybe he's back on form.
