What do you do when you have loved someone most of your life and don’t believe they will love you back? For Sarah Cass’ heroine, Eve, the answer is to be his “best friend” until it hurts so much you can’t stand it.
Eve’s New Year is part of the Holiday in Lake Point series, but reads very well as a stand-alone story. The book centers on Eve and Jake who have been friends since they grew up next door to each other and now work together. To say they have baggage would be a huge understatement. Most of the baggage belongs to Eve and was caused by a completely clueless Jake. I liked both characters, but was really frustrated by how two people who have been friends for so long could not manage to communicate better.
We meet these two when they are at a cross roads. Eve is offered an opportunity that she can’t turn down, but that means she will be moving three hours away. Jake has finally been getting a clue and realizing that he wants more with Eve than to be her friend and boss. What follows is a series of missteps and misunderstandings that make it hard to imagine these two ever getting their HEA.
One of the issues I struggled with early in the book was Eve’s lack of self-confidence. She seemed to think that the “crumbs” of affection she received from Jake in friend mode were all she deserved. We learn more about Eve’s background later in the story and that made me revise my opinion and start to like her more.
Overall, I enjoyed Eve’s New Year; it was an interesting take on a friends to lovers story that was easy to relate too. The book was also “just right” in terms of length. We got to see Eve and Jake struggle with their own issues and with each other without revisiting the same arguments repeatedly. The author did a great job with presenting an opportunity for our hero and heroine to resolve things that left me feeling the story was complete. I wouldn’t mind coming back to Lake Point for another holiday to see what some of Eve and Jake’s friends are up to.

Eve and Jake have been friends since school. Eve has loved Jake for as long as she can remember. He was the popular guy at school, who didn't let his status influence his personality. He was however blind to Eve's affections. Now that Eve is all grown up and threatening to leave Lake Point, Jake starts to question his true feelings for his best friend.
The characters are relatable and lovable. The story simple yet well written. This book has no steamy sex scenes, and would suit an adaptation to a daytime hallmark movie. I recommend Eve's New Year for those looking for a sweet read.
A Book Lovers Emporium
This one is about a girl named Eve and her life-long friend (and crush) Jake. Eve is trying to figure out what she wants out of life after being stuck in her small town doing the same things day to day. She's living a rut life, and needs to make some decisions. She gets a job offer she feels the need to take after the holidays pass, and Jake finds himself feeling very strongly about her leaving town....
A very light-hearted but fun filled friends to lovers story. Pretty well developed and a nice little read.
This was a sweet, clean, romance that tugged at my heartstrings a bit. I admit, I shed a few tears with this one. That's 2 books in a row that I read that had me spouting the waterworks. But, more about this book......
It was a very quick read, but very enjoyable. This wasn't necessarily a book about second chances but more of a book about realizing how they had messed up their possible first chance by not being honest with each other. Sometimes the truth hurts, but sometimes it can be everything you want an more...and believe me...I wanted more of this couple. They were funny at times, heartbroken at others, and perfect for each other the whole time.
I would have loved to have seen a wee bit more of their back story since this book took place over only a two week span and the relationship (Being BFF's) happened years and years ago. We did get a good bit of back story, but I would have loved to have seen more of his pov of past events.
The storyline was great, easy to follow, the characters were wasy to love and their dialogue was great. All in all...a great read.
Would I recommend this book? Yes!
