Pros: Puzzles are challenging but if you follow your gut you will perservere. I had to read a lot for this game. Although this will sound nuts, I felt smarter after playing this game.
It got me addicted. I went through stages: from Addiction to Intrigue and then to anticipation of wanting to beat it.
Cons: I was hoping for more of a scary feel. At times you may feel a little creeped out, but nothing more. A few (4 out of 38 or more)puzzles did frustrate me.
Tip: Buy the game if you like detective work (the constant studying and keeping your mind open) and you like forensics (not the study of dead people but the pragmatic approach of seeing the result and looking everywhere for the cause), if you like details.
Look for hints and beware of forums that don't hide spoilers. The game is much more fun when you don't cheat.
I'm going to stick with it,however. No game has beaten me yet,and this one won't either. I think.
It seems that my expectations of this game were much different than the result I got out of game play. Not a real big gamer, but I do have likes and preferences. This felt more like reality (like work) than like role-playing or gaming. Gaming is fun but work can be tedious and boring with all the research. Also, for those people who enjoy mental stimulation from games, you'll expend all that energy you saved for game playing on internet research trying to figure out names and geographical locations.
In sum: not a bad game, but not one to write home about either. As much fun as a sunny afternoon spent in the library.
That being said: This is, hands down, my favorite game. It's not a typical point-and-click adventure-style computer game, which I tend to find droll and monotonous, but is, instead, a cerebral mind f*** that keeps you guessing, thinking, and learning. The history and criminalistics presented throughout are, quite surprisingly, very accurate with some minor detail changes to help the game along or simply because of advances in knowledge (note that this game was initially released in 2006). I enjoyed the lack of visual environment and the use of esoteric puzzles, as well as the utilization of in-game character communication via e-mail and the available website where you can connect with other players across the world. Anyone considering buying evidence, I suggest looking up its predecessor game "Missing" and scrolling through the various screen shots, as I have noticed a dearth for Evidence. These are the kinds of puzzles you can expect with this game as well. Keep in mind while playing, too, that this game is not meant to be finished quickly. It's meant to make you think, ponder, read and go "wtf?" at least 10 times an hour. I've spoken with friends whom I have bullied in to playing, and they accepted that it sometimes takes several hours simply to get through one set of puzzles - but it's worth it.Read more ›
I got the game-sent "hints" days after opening particular puzzles.
Some websites created for the game are either no longer accessable or no longer on the first 5 search pages/in the results for the 5 most likely searches you would use.
Several important online articles are no longer on the web, leaving you screwed.
Some of the ingame tool features are bugged, leaving you screwed.
The information found using the above methods is integral to solving some puzzles, so you're screwed.
Though it was immensely satisfying when I was able to find enough active content to figure out the puzzles (about 40% of the time) it was too frequent that I ran into issues over the searches/sites.
The Endgame sequence needs a trigger (must have been on one of those sites), and the ending itself is anticlimatic at best.
BUT- if you like riddles, take a shot at it- it's a unique setup, and a brain teaser.... and when you run into a dead site there are plenty of walkthroughs that have the info you'll need.
