Huge disappointment. After reading 2 books on essential oils that had some interesting claims with little to know scientific information, I was very curious to look at a book that takes a better look at the chemical compounds found in essential oils and any studies conducted to see how these chemicals interact with human biology.
While open to the idea that essential oils have some therapeutic benefit and possible curative properties, the claims made along with the phrasing makes me very skeptical.
Everything started good with Johnson discussing the various chemicals found in pure essential oils and what those chemical purportedly do.
There were some red flags early though wen he started saying that study X "proved the oils were intelligently targeting bad bacteria" or that essential oils were "nature's perfection". I was also concerned by the high doses recommended, the stress on applying some oils neat, and the conclusion that oral use of oils was both safe and necessary. But for me the deal breaker comes in the cures where Johnson provides a treatment of ebola. Just no. If you include that kind of "cure" or "treatment" in you book then none of your other information can be trusted.
This book is meant to lure in the naive while offering potentially dangerous information in the guise of science which will make some people trust any information or directions offered.
First, Dr. Johnson provides in depth information on essential oils - their history, use, and application (oral, topical, inhalation...) along with his recommendation of the 42 basic EOs.
Then, the book moves to 77 of the most common essential oils. Information on each EO includes:
Name, Scientific Name, Family Name, Note, Aroma Intensity, Aroma, Common Extraction Method, Possible Substitute Oils, Blends Well With, Recommended Dilution Range, Primary Compounds, Other Compounds, Cautions, and Evidence (with cited references).
The following chapters include Essential Oils for Health Conditions...Children...Pregnancy, Labor and Childbrith.
Wrapping it all up at the end is:
Appendix A: Essential Oil Compounds
Appendix B: Homeopathic Remedy Profiles
Appendix C: Therapeutic Properties of Essential Oils
Appendix D: Usage Quick Reference Guide
Appendix E: Conversion Chart, Abbreviations and Definitions
Appendix F: Essential Oil Notes
Appendix G: Cautions Quick Reference Guide
and, a foot chart!
After that, you'll 2446 cited references.
If these things don't mean anything to you now, don't be intimidated! It will come to you as you read. But, my point is, beginner or not, this guide has everything you need to know. Do not waste you money on another book only to find it lacking. For me, this is the final 'go to' source for information.
Essential oils can be dangerous if used improperly so I needed a book with reliable sources. This book breaks down common oils, provides recipes for common health issues, lists precautions for children and pregnant women, and cites the studies used.
