In the fall of 1979, Sam Raimi and his merry band headed into the woods of rural Tennessee to make a movie. They emerged with a roller coaster of a film packed with shocks, gore, and wild humor, a film that remains a benchmark for the genre. Ash (cult fav

I ordered this thinking that it was the Limited Edition that is pictured on this item's main page. The limited edition has two discs (one blu-ray, one DVD extras). Very deceiving. Received it and found that it was a different version with a single disc. Quickly returned it after speaking to Amazon rep on the phone, and explaining their error. That was a year ago, and they are still going with that same deceptive and wrong picture of a totally different item. BEWARE!

Oh, Evil Dead. Thank you for being you. I love that a woman became possessed and violently drew Spongebob. I love that a woman was violated by a tree. I love that a zombie stabbed a girl's ankle with a pencil. I love that Ashley keeps getting trapped under empty bookshelves that weigh 10 pounds. I love how people sit around the fire relaxing while a zombie is trapped in the cellar. I love the sounds made screaming zombies. Do I generally have no idea what is happening in this movie? Yes. But I love YOU, Evil Dead.

Adam

Evil Dead is one of the most classic horror films ever. It was put together by director Sam Rami and actor Bruce Campbell who had to scrape the money together to film it, and mostly used their friends and family as the crew.
The film is about five friends who go up to a secluded cabin for the weekend and run into, you guessed it, nothing but evil. They immediately run into problems when Cheryl (Ellen Sandweiss) is taken over and draws a picture of a book with a face on it. Then a basement door pops open and they find an ancient book and a recorder. It turns out an archeologist had stayed at the cabin before and studied a Sumerian Book of the Dead. They begin listening to his recordings about his work which unleashes the demons contained within the book. They possess the forest, and eventually members of the group.
For basically having no money Rami was able to create an amazing film. The trees attacking Cheryl for example was creepy and very original as well. The later effects look real cheesy based upon today’s standards but they give a real feel to the movie. Finally, who doesn’t love Bruce Campbell? There’s nothing of his smart ass comments that he became known for but you get his earliest acting job here.
The bonus commentaries by Sam Rami and Bruce Campbell are great to watch after you’ve seen the whole things. The Campbell one is hilarious because his commentary gets to come out. He adds great trivia like the actors didn't use their real names, there was no basement in the cabin in Tennessee they used so that sequence was all filmed in Michigan and more.

I saw the graphic that suggests this was the Limited Edition with the bonus DVD disc. What you get is the bare bones bluray which has a similar cover. I was prepared to be very upset about this, until I realized that Amazon's description of this release is accurate. 1 disk, not 2. Whereas the graphic is misleading, the actual description of the disk is not. My fault. I should have read the description instead of impulse buying. :(
If you want this particular movie, there are better releases of it. If you were hoping for the limited edition version, you will NOT get it.

I thought I had seen it all when it comes to horror. I cannot believe it took me so long to finally watch this movie. I am impressed with the shot angles, disturbing sequences of audio, and the repetitive nature of each foreboding theme. Whether it be banging on a cabin or laughter that never seems to stop this movie kept me on my toes. I expected hilarity like in Ash vs. Evil Dead or Army of Darkness, both of which lead me here. I got none. I witnessed a young man exposed to gruesome possessions wherein he is forced to make a choice: dismember your friends or die. The dialogue was a bit cheesy in a couple places but everything else made up for those very small moments. Altogether I think its a great movie and a definite classic in my book.

First off the movie is great, it's exactly what you want and looks pretty great. The things I don't like are the uninspired packaging and complete lack of special features. The only one you get is Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, Robert Tapert, talking about the movie. And I don't even think theyre watching the movie just kinda talking about random things about the making of the movie. They don't reference any part of it and they nearly mute the movie to kinda go along with the lack of connection to what you're seeing on screen.

Extreme horror punctuated perfectly with just the right amount of comic relief and drama. Sometimes the make-up and special effects are primitive and not exactly "seamless", but the movie and the performances are just so great that this doesn't detract from the experience at all. I've seen The Evil Dead over 40 times in just about as many years and it just keeps getting better with every viewing. You simply can't say that about many other movies.

We finally the NC-17 or on cut addition of Sam Raimi's "The Evil Dead" and at a unbelievably low price of $4.99 in HD and SD. Being a big horror fan and the fan of the series I was extremely stoked to see that this version was up on Amazon instant video along with the new Starz subscription, I first watched it on Starz to see if this was actually the NC-17 addition that was re-released when the 2013 edition came out on DVD when the remake was released . It was! So immediately after that I purchased it in HD . The current print of this film being sold is superb every way end even the audio is 5.1 . Where as my DVD from 2003-ish is only stereo. They did a really great job mastering the video footage and audio and the footage that has been reinserted into the NC-17 addition does not look distorted or aged at all they did a great job at making that look like it had been there all along and was never getting that out for 33 or 32 years . Anyways , I see why the evil dead franchise/ArmyofDarkness movies have done so well and now why there is ash vs the evil dead on Starz. Highly recommend checking out that in buying it if you are a fan of the series also. Anyways no complaints love it!

Not...Book of the Dead!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 15, 2021Verified Purchase
Hi, there is very little that has yet to be said about this cheap horror masterpiece put together in 1978 and released in the UK in 1982 before a very successful run on home video which prompted it's return to late night horror screenings at your local fleapit. Messrs Raimi, Tapert and Campbell raised money from rich dentists in the Michigan locality to pay for the extended shoot after convincing them they could make a movie, after screening for them a horror short known as Within the Woods, also starring Campbell. The various documentaries that have been produced charting the development of Evil Dead (some of them as extras on this DVD) talk of a distended shooting and production process that lasted 4 years, as Producer Rob Tapert, Director Sam Raimi and star Bruce Campbell repeatedly had to go back to the well to secure the financing to finish to movie off. That's not to mention the horrendous shooting conditions, sometimes in the dead of winter, with Campbell being repeatedly covered in Caro Syrup (some kind of processed substance used in doughnuts) whilst running around in the dead of night smacking hapless actresses with foam wooden beams and discharging an actual shotgun because they couldn't afford a prop firearm! Hilarious! I have watched this numerous times throughout pre-DVD years having owned a great quality video copy of the movie which to this day remains a better quality of transfer than this most recent DVD edition. This movie has been re-issued on DVD on numerous occasions and has yet to match the visual quality of the original video special edition, which to my ongoing irritation, I actually sold to a second hand shop way-back-when in the mists of time! The visual transfer of this particular edition is satisfactory and betters the sharpness of the special edition DVD that accompanied the Book of the Dead edition released in 2008, though there have been some complaints that the most recent Blu Ray released of the movie also suffers from the same issues. Perhaps this may be due to the quality of the original print that subsequent Disc re-issues have failed to address? It was made in 1978 after all. Watching it recently the picture hasn't aged well, with numerous continuity issues and differing film stock which makes for a slightly jarring viewing experience. But I suppose that's not really the point. Like it or loathe it EVIL DEAD is still a classic and should be promoted as such to all those who have yet to see it! Perhaps in the fullness of time we'll receive the ultimate Blu Ray release with a Star Wars A New Hope style digital restoration.

Golden oldie or rubbish?

Released way back in the days of VHS and Betamax video tapes, this film may be long in the tooth but it still packs a mighty punch. Yes you've probably seen it all before, but the ammount of gore in this still shocks and numbs the senses. Whilst it doesn't have 'modern' cgi effects, the old fashioned prosthetics add an almost surreal animated visual aspect to the gore that gives the film a quirky -and even more terrifying 'other-world', feel than most modern movies do.
if you don't mind the 'B' movie, low budget, shlock horror genre and haven't seen this one before (are you dead or pre-teen?) then you must give this a try. The characters are way over the top and make all the classic mistakes that 'victims' always do, but this film does them even more obviously than others, proving beyond doubt that 'horror victims' are truely stupid.
So pull up the chair, get the mates around, turn off the lights, get some popcorn and have yourself a good old fashined scare fest with this classic. Mind you, you may not want to eat once the gore kicks in. Alternatively, just watch it with someone who screams a lot and you wont be disapointed ..... now where is that copy of Evil dead II....

Great cult classic / okay - good blu-ray quality
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 22, 2016Verified Purchase
Highly entertaining, cult classic horror movie, which for the time incorporated some innovative cinematography, editing and visual / make-up effects for the genre. Although dated in many ways, it still shocks at times and has many laugh at loud moments (whether deliberate or not). The low-budget and grainy look of the film does not hold up too well on blu-ray in comparison to other films, but this was to be expected and it still probably looks the best and most vibrant it ever has done. Also includes a good amount of interesting special features and behind the scenes documentaries on the film.
