Really glad you have the option to watch The Evil Dead in either 1.33:1 or 1.85:1 aspect ratio.The Evil Dead is very atmospheric, creeping up on the characters until the first major deadite scene. From that point on it is completely relentless.Raimi proved himself with the original but I think he mastered his ability to balance tones with Evil Dead 2. It's a horror/comedy that is endlessly creative and a lot of fun.

The first movie disturbed the crap out of me when I saw it as a teen. I was less disturbed by the 2nd one but it was still pretty chilling. I was not much of a horror fan back then, but i've come around lately, and after binging the TV series on hulu and having a blast, I decided I had to revisit the original films and it's a joy coming back to it afterward. I haven't checked out the bonus features yet, but the picture is really grainy, especially the first film, but I think that is actually desirable for a horror film made in this time period.

If you haven't seen these films yet, here's a little warning... or pro-tip... whatever you want to call it. The 2nd movie appears to be a remake at first, as they do a short re-cap of the original film, however things are slightly different than they were in the film... that's because they could not get the rights to the original film to show clips from it... that's right, they couldn't get the rights to their own movie. So here's what you do, and there's even a video on youtube of Bruce Campbell explaining this, Remember how the first movie ends... watch evil dead 2, and slightly dis-regard the recap up until the point where the scene syncs up with the ending of the first movie, and there you have your canon order of events for this series.
I believe you have to do something a bit similar for the third film, but since that's not a part of this package, i'll leave that out of this review.
Anyway, grade A classic horror, a must watch for fans of practical effects.

I see some reviews mentioning the 4K disc of The Evil Dead only being in 4:3 as a negative, but as the movie was shot on 16mm, this is the best way to watch it. Any version of the film “enhanced” for widescreen TVs is actually just cropped/zoomed.

I was thoroughly impressed by the quality of both the audio and video on these discs. If you’re used to the quality of the old dvd releases, I think you’ll be happy with them too.

That being said, if you like special features, I wouldn’t get rid of the DVDs. This set is pretty bare bones in that regard, with nothing but a commentary track (and the Bruce Campbell audio commentary from the DVD release is not here, it’s a new track with Campbell, Sam Raimi, and Robert Tapert that’s pretty lackluster)

Overall, though, this is a great way to watch 2 classic films in superb quality, and very reasonably priced.

This is one of the few horror movies I truly enjoyed, because the film offers a great combination of horror and comedy. It adds up to a very entertaining 85 minutes.

There's a lot to like in this kinda-goofy movie: nice visuals; good humor to counteract the scariness and gore of a horror story; a small amount of ridiculous theology compare to what usually is offered in this genre, and some totally outrageous scenes. They include a woman's head loose and then biting a man's hand with the rest of her body running around with a chainsaw; a hand with a mind of it's own, monster-type grandma and grandpa in the cellar, chase scenes through a forest with trees coming to life and attacking people, on and on....wild, wild stuff.

Not bad for a 2 movie blu ray combo, although it would be better if they remastered the films instead of just straight out transfer the movie from VHS to blu ray; which is pretty apparent in the first movie, although since it’s a cult classic, it’s fine that way. Nevertheless a great collection, and they included some extra footage of behind the scenes and some interviews, which is nice, and the unexpected gross made on the first film, and taking forever to finish the film, etc. Evil Dead never gets old and a great price for blu ray. Buy it while this seller keeps it supplied.
