Review

"This is your one stop title for all the blood, guts, madness and mayhem you simply cannot find in any other series. I mean, I’m sure you could, if you tried hard enough, but this is the world of The Evil Dead, why would you need anything more than that!" — Comic Book Hangover

About the Author

Frank Hannah (1971) was born in Clydebank, Scotland, but grew up in Southern California in the shadow of Hollywood. Primarily a screenwriter, Frank writes for film and television, but has also written video games and comic books. His first produced film, The Cooler, became an indie sensation at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival. He continues to work as a freelance writer.

Justin Peniston is one-half of Big & Tall Tales, and co-creator of Hunter Black and Rocket Queen and The Wrench, among other, more famous comics and cartoons (Ben 10, Avengers Assemble!, Blue Beetle, JSA, Evil Dead 2). If you were to ask Justin where he was from, he would tell you Los Angeles, unless he was actually in Los Angeles (where he lives), in which case he would answer Washington, DC (where he grew up). His mom is in DC, his wife in LA, so either answer works, really.

Jeffrey J. Mariotte is the bestselling, multiple-award-winning author of more than seventy novels, including dark thriller EMPTY ROOMS, original supernatural thrillers SEASON OF THE WOLF, COLD BLACK HEARTS, RIVER RUNS RED and MISSING WHITE GIRL, horror epic THE SLAB, thriller THE DEVIL'S BAIT, and the Bram Stoker-Award nominated teen horror quartet DARK VENGEANCE, as well as books set in the universes of Mafia III, NCIS: New Orleans and NCIS: Los Angeles, Supernatural, CSI, Star Trek, Spider-Man, Superman, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Conan the Barbarian, 30 Days of Night, and more. His occasional nonfiction includes the true crime book CRIMINAL MINDS: SERIAL KILLERS, SOCIOPATHS & OTHER DEVIANTS. Some of his short horror fiction has been collected in NINE FRIGHTS.

Georgia Ball has been writing for an audience since 2004 when she launched a webcomic with her husband, artist Scott Ball. Scooter and Ferret ran until 2010 when she ended the strip to work on licensed comic books. Since then she’s written for a variety of all-ages properties including Transformers, Scooby Doo, Disney Princesses, Strawberry Shortcake and Evil Dead 2. Recent projects have included Disney’s Frozen Comic Collection from Joe Books, three Strawberry Shortcake graphic novels from IDW Publishing and two graphic novels for Scholastic’s Graphix imprint. She is also the writer of Dark Lily from Space Goat Productions.

Dave Land has worked as a comics editor since 1996 including fifteen years as a Senior Editor with Dark Horse Comics, working on titles including Star Wars, Tony Millionaire’s Sock Monkey, Sergio Aragonés' Groo, and Conan. Dave's books have won three Eisners and one Harvey and he has worked with two successive Russ Manning award winners, Jerome Opeña (2003) and Eric Wight (2004). He's worked with licensors including Lucasfilm, Fox, Blizzard, Pixar, and Disney as well as some of the world’s best comics creators including the legendary Jerry Robinson, Al Williamson, and Carlos Meglia. Dave is also proud to have written the series Werewolves on the Moon: Versus Vampires with the Fillbach Brothers and the series Star Wars: Infinities — The Empire Strikes Back. Dave spends his time trying not to take life too seriously with his wife, daughter, and two cats in Portland, Oregon.

I’m all about expanding beyond what we are shown on the screen and this is a fantastic continuation of a cult classic.

I was a little surprised that some pages stuck together and others were folded over. I thought it was a new book but I don't know what to think now. I was not very pleased with it

What a roller coaster in opinion, because... wow... this book was a massive disappointment when compared to the first book in the series, "Beyond Dead by Dawn."

I really liked "Beyond Dead By Dawn", and in my review for that I said that the series was off to a pretty great start. This book of short stories completely derails that great start. On the one hand, the artwork is still top-notch, but the writing is where it struggles.

Each of the short stories in this book are completely disconnected from the overall story of "Evil Dead", and in some cases they don't feel like they exist in the same universe at all. It's like they took some unconnected short stories and just slotted them into an Evil Dead comic because the stories happen to feature supernatural elements or a demonic presence.

The big issue is that the short story format causes some of these stories to come across as jumbled or confusing. The plots don't always make full sense, and they're often wrapped up suddenly and without fulfillment.

I hope the next full story arc is better than this short story collection.
