Editorial Reviews

Holy Wave is a band of multi-instrumentalists from Austin, TX. Originally from El Paso, the band's sound has evolved into a unique blend of sun baked surf-psychedelia. Holy Wave creates a brand of psych that brings to mind fellow Texans like The 13th Floor Elevators and modern contemporaries like The Black Angels and Night Beats, dyed in carefully constructed noise with an attention to detail echoing the work of influences like My Bloody Valentine and Spectrum. The Reverberation Appreciation Society is proud to present Holy Wave's ''Evil Hits'' which compiles 5 tracks from the band's 2011 LP ''Knife Hits'' and all 5 tracks off their 2012 EP ''The Evil Has Landed''. This release will precede their upcoming LP to be released in April 2013.

'Evil Hits' is actually a compilation of material from Holy Wave's first two releases, the full-length album 'Knife Hits' and the EP 'The Evil Has Landed,' both from last year, and serves as an excellent introduction to these underrated Austin psych-rockers.

Their sound fuses elements of 60's U.S. and British psych--similar to the Brian Jonestown Massacre's 90's work--with hazy, bendy walls of guitars in the vein of 90's shoegaze bands like My Bloody Valentine or Ride. That combined with the propulsive rhythms, droning atmospherics, intertwining melodies, reverb-laden vocals, surf-rock undertones, and murky production results in a listening experience that's melodic and catchy, but capable of transporting the listener to a hypnotized state of bliss.

The first five songs of the album are taken from Holy Wave's first album, and it's by far the noisier half, with piercing sheets of sound and furious motorik-style rhythms that makes for a hypnotic, dreamy listen. The second half of the album contains their entire followup EP, which has more of a laid-back 60's psychedelic vibe, focusing more on the melodies than walls of guitars, with more emphasis on instrumental interplay, but still with tripped-out background atmospherics such as "Tomorrow Never Knows"-style backwards guitar and swirling organ.

Even though this a compilation, it actually flows like a cohesive work, one that's absolutely essential for fans of psych music and shoegaze, especially artists like the aforementioned bands, Spacemen 3, Crystal Stilts, 13th Floor Elevators, Magic Castles, and early Floyd. You should know pretty quickly after listening to the samples whether this would be up your alley or not, but for me it was an intense, trance-inducing headphone journey that I'll definitely be revisiting again and again for the foreseeable future.
