When it comes to horror games, I have played them all: Resident Evil series, Silent Hill series, The Suffering's, Daylight, the independent releases Japan has had out, the Manhunt series, etc. Across all consoles, I have played them all.

This game is a true delight to play. It brings back the original aspects of what truly frightens your senses. Dark environments, unknowns lurking around the corner, the uncertainty of not knowing where you are, this game has mastered it all with stunning graphics to boot. For those wondering what the game play is like; take all the examples I listed above, and put their best aspects together.

Now that you know the game is awesome to play, let's talk about graphics. This game has taken a big leap forward for Bethesda; they have fine tuned their graphics engine and produced a masterpiece. I have played this on my 42" TV in my living room and it looks like you're watching an animated horror film. The graphics don't cut at all, the visual effects are amazing, the details in the characters are top notch.

For those of you reading the reviews for people who have had issues with the game, those are coming from people who don't know how to work their stuff. Take it from a 20 year IT veteran, there is nothing wrong with this game at all.

I can't get over how awesome this game is. I've been playing it for two days straight and jumped several times. This one is definitely at the very top of my horror gaming collection. Do yourself a favor and buy it, it is very highly worth it.

I'm not going to judge this game based on it's performance on computers of varying power... this is simply about the game itself. And the game itself is AWESOME. This is a horror game in the vein of Resident Evil, not the same as Silent Hill or Amnesia, so it's much more action oriented. It's scares come from grotesque and difficult monsters and environments, not the fear of the paranormal.

Gameplay mechanics (4/5)
If you played Resident Evil 4, the gameplay mechanics are almost identical. Even the zombies are pretty much the same in that they will usually shamble along slowly, giving you time to line up your shots, unless they get close and then they will run at you. You can sprint, crouch and sneak although you can't jump with the exception of contextual based areas where you climb or hurdle things. You can assign up to 4 hotkey items for easy access. If you want to access a gun that hasn't been assigned to a hotkey, you do a partial pause of the game to pick your new gun. I say partial pause because it doesn't actually pause the game but slows everything to about 1/4 of it's normal speed. So in the thick of battle it gives you some time to make adjustments but you still can't dawdle. The game uses green gel as it's currency, which you can gather throughout the maps and then spend them to upgrade things like weapon damage, magazine capacity, max health, sprint time, reload speed, melee damage, etc. Scattered throughout the maps are little ceramic statues which hold keys. The keys can be used back at your "base/hub" area to unlock lockers, which usually contain goodies like lots of ammo, lots of green gel, health items, etc.

Combat (5/5)
You shoot a variety of weapons including revolvers, shotguns, sniper rifles and a crossbow.

This is a TPS (Third Person Shooter) horror/survival game in the spirit of Resident Evil or Silent Hill. Graphics are pretty cool and the various monsters/creatures are totally fine, mind you I wasn't scared for a millisecond playing this game but it takes a lot to creep me out. This game could've been much better with a better save system. There are a lot of quick deaths in this game which will take you several tries just to figure out the correct sequence to continue on. (like a bunch of rooms with booby traps) But most annoying is completing rather long sections only to get killed near a checkpoint and have to replay the whole thing over again. This also entails picking up all the various inventory items over and over again to try and complete a section. It does get old. The controls, be it keys and mouse or game-pad (tried both) are somewhat inexact in a game that requires precision. I cursed this game a lot while I played it but I did complete it. I would've loved some sort of quick-save system. It's an OK game but I wouldn't pay full price for it. I got it for 75% off on steam.

This is a review of what is included in the retail PC DVD version of the game.
It has a special edition packing slipcover with a hologram of Sebastian's face  screaming with barbwire on it.
The cover on the case is the same but with a cover on the back of the asylum in black with a blood red sky with a outline a the main character with a gun.
Inside is a Steam code for the Fighting Chance Pack digital upgrade and a actual full game manual with the Steam activation code on back. The game is on 4 dvds.
Update All the codes work on steam but even after installing from the dvds you will have to download updates that will take awhile to download.

I really enjoyed this game. Great atmosphere, good enemy design, beautiful graphics if you have solid hardware. There were a few places where I felt the game resorted to old tropes, but nothing that kept me from wanting to move forward.
