The evil within is a strange beast. Sometimes it is really good and I feel like I'm playing a proper successor to Resident Evil 4. Other times its incredibly frustrating and I feel like I'm playing...well any Resident Evil game that came after 4. I can see what they were trying to do and I really appreciate the effort. This game did actually make me tense and spook me on more than one occasion. However, its really difficult to maintain that immersion when I have to stand in just the right spot to pull a lever or I get stuck on something. The game is often clunky and the reduced field of view due to the widescreen aspect ratio really makes it hard to navigate a lot of the time. I get they wanted a cinematic look but I would often hit trip wires because I couldn't see them. If the letterbox wasn't there I would have seen it. For a game that insists on setting up traps for you that is a real bother. Also, the checkpoint system ain't exactly the most generous. I had to play through certain sections over and over again because one false move got me killed. Normally I wouldn't mind but it got very repetitive and a lot of why I would die is because the game doesn't really articulate what I'm supposed to be doing very well. I don't need them to spell it out to me but sometimes the level design was poor and extremely difficult to navigate. Couple that with poisonous gas slowly killing you AND a guy with a big hammer that keeps getting up after I gun him down and you got a very annoying gameplay experience. Its sad because in better hands this could have been great, but here it just feels like the entire time the game is working against me, and not in the good way. Gun play isn't terrible but you can tell the game doesn't want you to always go that route.Read more ›

This is one hard game! But I love a challenge so its pretty neat. I like the whole new concept this game brings alongside the fact that everything is limited...you're either running away from the enemies or trying to kill them with the limited amount of bullets the game provides. Mind you, you WILL DIE several times because of the few minor glitches you might experience. The controls are not very very tight as I would like them to be but you still manage to get a hang of it after a while. This game is great for the scare factor and that it doesn't let you off too easy even at the normal difficulty. If you enjoy a challenge and really horrid situations and enemies, you will enjoy this. Overall great game

I was waiting for this game for so long, was excited about it ever since I saw the first trailer with live action footage in it. Something about that live action footage just didn't translate into so well into the cgi.

The art is nice, but the gameplay is unforgivably bad, mostly due to the teeeeerrible camera. I don't get motion sickness, but I can really see how that would be an issue for some people with this game. This issue has never been so bad that it ever bothered me before in any other game. Your field of vision is just sooo small, too zoomed in, and your own body blocks so much of the view... I know a lot of others have complained about the same issue, so I don't have to go in depth about it, just adding my voice.

For some reason I really liked Joseph even though he was a side character and I liked the portions of the game (sparse as they were) where you'd have backup.

Would have been nice if the stealth features of the game had been more developed, but it's very limited and there aren't as many situations throughout the game to use it as I would have liked to see.

Oh and the other element that REALLY pissed me off was the fact that ALL melee weapons (except for your bare hands) are one-use-only. Why oh why would you only be able to use an axe ONCE and it's suddenly obsolete? Ammunition in this game is ridiculously sparse, so it reaaally would have been nice to have a decent melee option, but even if you fully upgrade your melee damage, you barely do any damage unless you're wielding a one-use weapon.

The game is fairly difficult, which is fine. I've enjoyed plenty of difficult games, but combined with all the above factors, this game becomes far more of a drudgery than fun.

The Evil Within is a great game, just some simple things that make it a 4 outta 5.
One thing that I'm not too concerned with is the graphics. Although fairly decent, the graphics are no where near what they could be for a "next gen" console. But this doesn't take away from the game very much.
The big con for the game is the linear and sometimes repetitive gameplay. Many scenarios or whole levels feel similar, and basically like your just forced to go about it one way only. This is okay sometimes but I'd like a little something more direction wise. With this sometimes it feels like you have no choice but to die in the game, this came up 2 times during the game where as you run for this one villain he appears right in front of you and one shot kills you. I looked online after trying a few times and many people suffer from same problem, without any solution but to keep trying and hoping the bad guy somehow misses (he did for me on the 4th try).
Overall a really fun game, if you like Resident Evil 4 or 5 you'll love this game, a lot of it feel similar to those games, even some levels/ enemies do. Well worth the money, here's to hoping for a sequal :D
