Editorial Reviews

For the first time since it debuted on Broadway over 30 years ago, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's seven-time Tony Award®-winning musical EVITA is back on Broadway. The production stars Grammy®-winning international superstar Ricky Martin as Ché, Olivier Award®-winning Argentinean actress Elena Roger making her Broadway debut as Evita and Tony Award®-winner Michael Cerveris as Juan Perón.

Masterworks Broadway proudly releases the New Broadway Cast Recording of EVITA, the first complete English language recording of the show since the original 1979 Broadway cast album. The 2-CD set is produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Nigel Wright, with Tim Rice as Executive Producer. It features a limited edition outer sleeve and includes a bonus track of Elena Roger performing Don t Cry For Me in Spanish ("No Llores Por Mi Argentina").

EVITA tells Eva Perón's passionate and tragic story through Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's most dazzling and beloved score which includes the songs "Don t Cry for Me Argentina," "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" and "High Flying Adored," together with "You Must Love Me," the Oscar®-winning hit from the film version of EVITA.

My husband and I saw this production in April 2012 and thoroughly enjoyed it. I have directed "Evita" twice, so I am very familiar with the show, the characters, and the score. Many people like to use choice adjectives to describe Ms. Roger's voice. To say I disagree is an understatement. First of all, others who have performed (and recorded) this role have SCREAMED their way through the entire score. Ms. Roger does indeed use a full belt when necessary, but she employs a much greater emotional range than others who have played this role and she is not afraid to use her head voice, when appropriate. Ricky Martin is fantastic, as is the great Michael Cerveris. Rachel Potter as the Mistress is the only downside for me. She lacks the innocence in her voice required for the role. I am thrilled that they recorded the entire score. The arrangements are perfect! Not too many changes...just enough to really make it work. A+

As a fan of the Madonna-Banderas 1996 film, I am well acquainted with all the songs, and know most of the lyrics by heart. To be honest, I waited for the release of this cd almost with trepidation, especially after viewing the cast perform two numbers on the street in front of 'Good Morning America' on April 12, 2012. Ms. Roger's voice was weak and often off-key. But as a friend pointed out, it was a damp, rainy morning and the principals probably had only a few hours sleep before their 8:20 a.m. performance on this morning show. So I bit my tongue and hoped for the best.

Well, worry no more! This recording is simply fantastic. Ricky Martin, Elena Roger, Michael Cerveris and the entire company have outdone themselves. It's one of the best Broadway albums I've heard in quite some time. What is particularly impressive (in addition to their outstanding voices) is the sharp diction applied to each lyric. I picked up on lyrics never heard before. It's a two-disc set. You won't be disappointed. In addition, there is a complete libretto enclosed--which is rarely supplied on original cast recordings.

If you wish to see some behind-the-scenes footage on the making of this excellent cd, check them out on youtube.

Growing up my mom used to play the original 1979 Broadway recording nearly every weekend while she cleaned the house. So "Evita" has been drilled into my head. Over the years I picked up the original 1976 British concept album and later the Madonna soundtrack. So when I heard a new Broadway recording was coming, I was looking forward to it. The result is less than expected. First off, the music updates are perfect, the vocal performances however are very weak. Ricky Martin over enunciates through out the album, switching between a latin accent and a very hard "R" American accent (for example singing "I un-DER-stand their feelings...." rather than "I unda-stand their feelings...."). Michael Cerveris as Juan Peron is fine, but Elena Roger as Eva is completely wrong. Her voice is incredibly shrill and has too much vibrato. In fact the show's centerpiece "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" is almost unlistenable. She sounds like a cross between Tiny Tim, Gizmo from Gremlins and one of the chipmunks. The performance sounds as if it was recorded at the wrong speed, it's a mess.
Yes, I am one of those who feel that Patti Lupone's "Eva" is THE definitive Eva, but I thought Madonna did a fantastic job as well. Ms. Roger is just way out of her element here. Being that this entire show is sung, you need to act through singing, it sounds as if she has learned the lyrics, but didn't quite get the motivation behind the words. Perhaps this should have been recorded after several stage performances, so she would have gotten a better grasp of the story? Eva is supposed to sound like a woman who will rip you to shreds if you stand in her way, while sounding very sympathetic to her descamisados. She is none of that on this recording.

Having seen and thoroughly enjoyed the new Broadway production, this CD is a brilliant keep sake. Elena Roger is for me, just perfect. No, she isn't the stereotypical Broadway diva that produces huge notes at the end of every song, but she does demonstrate a huge pathos in the role of Eva. Ms Roger grows from the innocent Miss Duarte into the feisty, power hungry Evita. Her latin American heritage brings another dimension to this central role that so many will be familiar with.
A reviewer on Amazon refers to her rendition of 'Argentina" as a "mess" - I find this unbelievable. For the first time, in my experience, Elena delivers the song as it's meant to be - in the form of a speech. I found her performance on stage, and the recording, riveting; she is also a gifted dancer.
Ricky Martin delivers a solid vocal performance (there are a few Americanisms); Michael Cerveris is an excellent and slightly menacing Peron; Max von Essen sings Magaldi brilliantly, although not overly excited with Rachel Potter.
The company vocal arrangements are solid and the orchestrations are a joy to listen too. 'Buenos Aires' is stunning!
I think SONY have dealt a trump card with this release.
I hope Elena Roger will be around for many years to come. Her performances in 'Piaf' & 'Passion' is London were a treat to behold.
It's been some 30 years since the original Broadway cast album. I will always revere that version but for me, this CD is a new, fresh realisation of what I consider to be a masterpiece of musical theatre.

Play it loud! 10/10
