"This delicate flower is my maternal first cousin. You may now commence scheming on how to get into her pants."
I did not want to put this book down. It's a fast paced, action packed adventure that had me on the edge of my seat. In the world of ANGELs, super heroes are revered by society. In fact, the US government relies on them for protection of its people and country.
The kickass heroine I talked about, Candace AKA "Candy Cane" has been obsessed with supers her entire life and when she comes of age, she applies for the ANGEL school of supers... it's not really called that but it has a nice ring to it, right? Anyway, there she meets and befriends her idols and learns to kick ass with them. But, no one ever told her what becoming a super would do to her body, specifically her hormones. Wowzers! Thankfully she's got a hot boyfriend but there's another guy she can't quite shake off. At first, I didn't care for Jackson but god his sarcasm and wit were off the charts! I couldn't help but fall for that guy.
"You don't need to be so defensive about it, Sugar Plum... It's perfectly natural to find me irresistible."
But, this book isn't all fun and games. With great power comes great responsibility and some people just aren't cut out for it. The ending was shocking to say the least, and I HAD to start the second book immediately. Starla sucked me into their world from page one and honestly, I'd be happy to stay there for oh... how about forever, so I could become a super too. Why can't that happen? WHY?!
Anyway, my point is, if you like the above mentioned things *cough* hot super heroes *cough* then definitely check out this book! It will make you laugh, swoon, and wish you could become a super hero.
As a complete nerd, I have to also comment - SCIENCE! The amount of research and knowledge that went into this book is staggering. Coming from a science and geek-ish background, I was very impressed with the word usage, medical terms, and descriptions for everything. When we hear certain terms, we get a picture in our head of what that must be like. Ms. Huchton just took it a step further and made us feel each description and change that the superheroes go through. It was the perfect balance of nerdiness and it flowed right in. Even people that aren't drooling for awesome science will be able to enjoy how it is described. There's not too much or too little. Simply perfect!
The abilities! WOW again. (There can never be too much wow for a great book, in my opinion!). If you're a superhero lover and geek like me, you are waiting for the typical abilities. You see glimpses of what you would consider a super power, but then Ms. Huchton adds her own brand of magic to it and turns it into something truly incredible. By the end of the book, I couldn't decided if I wanted to be a super hero or just fangirl over them all.
In perfect honesty, I cursed when I finished it. It was a fabulous read and I just cannot wait for the next one! Way to go, Ms. Huchton. You officially addicted a reader. Thank you!!
I admit, I saw a whole lot of myself in one of the characters, though. I identified very strongly with him, and knowing me, I saw [NOT PUTTING IN A SPOILER] coming. It couldn't have gone any other way, not with that character in that mindset. Huchton has really made things real and stayed true to her characters even when she knows it will be painful for the reader. It's great to know she isn't shy about it.
