About the author

Philip Gulley has become the voice of small town American life. Gulley is a Quaker pastor, writer, and speaker from Danville, Indiana. He has written 21 books, including the "Harmony" series recounting life in the eccentric Quaker community of Harmony, Indiana and the the "Hope" series which continues the exploits of Sam Gardner, first introduced in the "Harmony" series.
Gulley also authored the best-selling "Porch Talk" essay series. Gulley’s memoir, "I Love You, Miss Huddleston" was a finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Humor. In addition, Gulley, with co-author James Mulholland, shared their progressive spirituality in the books "If Grace Is True" and "If God Is Love,"" followed by Gulley’s books "If the Church Were Christian," "The Evolution of Faith," and "Living the Quaker Way."
Gulley's 22nd book entitled "Unlearning God: How Unbelieving Helped Me Believe" will be released on September 25, 2018.
"An illuminating spiritual memoir from America’s favorite Quaker storyteller shows how beliefs learned early must often be unlearned so that more helpful and enduring understandings can thrive."

THE EVOLUTION OF FAITH is structured much like a typical manual of Christian theology: Revelation, God, Jesus, the Living Spirit, Who Are We?, Suffering and Evil, Salvation, Prayer, The Church, The Afterlife, and so on. But the chapter titles conceal a truly radical, meta-Christian, approach to each of these areas of church teaching such that I found myself holding my breath, hoping that ghosts of the Inquisition weren't lurking in my Kindle. And indeed in 2007 an attempt to remove Gulley's credentials as a Quaker minister was initiated in his Yearly Meeting (synod). Gulley's troubles with guardians of the faith began years earlier, as evidenced by the charge leveled by the Rev. Albert Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, that in If Grace Is True: Why God Will Save Every Person (2003) Gulley and Mulholland "jettison the whole structure of Christian conviction." Ironically, seen in retrospect, IF GRACE IS TRUE is in no wise the challenge to Christian orthodoxy that THE EVOLUTION OF FAITH is!
Like Phil Gulley I am a Quaker by convincement, and like Friend Gulley I am a universalist though not of Christian persuasion. Yet, I think of myself as a member of Phil's larger flock and feel that his radical universalism will be of inestimable value to any person of questing faith, Christian or not. To that end I heartily give THE EVOLUTION OF FAITH all the stars in the firmament of courageous religious thought.
Philip Gulley has chosen about 10 of Christianity's stickiest issues and has given an exposition on each that unburdens them from antiquated interpretations. For example, humankind has been living under the curse of "Adam's sin". That is we are sinners before we have taken our first breath. Considering that Adam is a character in a myth, Gulley asks, why would a God who urged us to love and forgive others hold a grudge against all humanity for the sin that never happened, of one man" who, in fact, never was?
In the chapter on Suffering and Evil, Gulley explains that in spite of the teaching that God is all knowing and all powerful, there is no evidence to suggest that devout Christians suffer less than non-believers. God does not intervene in the affairs of life. We cannot escape hardship and misfortune by sending more money to the TV evangelist. He states that while Christian people may not be able to avoid suffering, they might experience God's love and comfort through the ministry of a fellow sufferer. In so doing we become the answer to the prayers of another.
While to many, these examples may seem heretical, even blasphemous, they are closer to the truth and remove many of the obstacles that stand in the way of honest seekers, who have been required to lay aside their intellect to accept the premises of the faith.
Gulley uses narratives from his own experience to introduce his issues. To the open-minded reader, here is a fresh breath of air!
These two books are needed steps along the way of updating religious beliefs to agree more closely with the progress of science. In the process it appears possible, as well as necessary, for prevention of future religious wars, for us to learn that, shed of their dispensable jargon, all world religions proclaim essentially the same ideas about God and mankind.
In his rather folksy manner, with many anecdotes, Gulley proposes that, in all religions, man has access to a "Divine Presence" (the spirit of God), through which he can feel God's love and a need to share this love with others. To Gulley this love is the essence of the Divine Presence, or as it says in the First Letter of John, "God is Love". The main task of man, therefore, is not to defend the rituals of the past, which were thought to please God, but to express the Divine Presence by extending love and aid to other humans, especially those less fortunate. This behavior, when it can be accomplished, overshadows religious dogma and unifies mankind, healing differences and eliminating conflict. According to Gulley, this teaching was the original purpose of Jesus, not the idea that his blood redeemed man from sin.
While this is a controversial book, and surely both fundamentalists and progressives will find parts they cannot agree with, it is a necessary book, and, along with "Love Wins", a first step into a debate that must be had by all those with a serious faith in the process of living together on an ever shrinking planet.
