The Evolution of Ivy: Antidote is the second and final book in The Evolution of Ivy series. You must read The Evolution of Ivy: Poison first as this is a continuing story.
There will be some spoilers from the first book.
The story alternates POVs between Emily/Ivy and Brooks. Occasionally we have some chapters from the past.
The book begins right where the first book left off. In the first book we found out that Ivy changed her name to Emily and got a complete make-over (with surgeries) in order to get Brooks. This included tormenting his fiancée. The Evolution of Ivy: Poison was so good. Ivy was so damaged and disturbed. I could not get enough of her. The book was completely addictive.
For this reason Antidote was one of my most anticipated reads of Fall 2017. I absolutely loved The Evolution of Ivy: Poison and could not want to see what would happen next.
In the first book we met Ivy and she was a psycho. And I could not get enough of her. She was so mean. But everything she did was so hilarious. The reader should not want to root for her. But I just loved everything about her. And I could not help but want her to succeed.
Book two was good. But I was finding myself wishing for more crazy. The first book was so amazing. But I found much of this book to be a bit tame in comparison. This book felt like more of a romance. Whereas the first book to me did not have that same feeling at all.
Brooks definitely annoyed me in Antidote. He wanted Emily from the start. His reasoning re: Deacon (his best friend having previously dated Emily) honestly made me want to hit him. Especially how on and off he would get.
I definitely liked the last third of the book the best. This part was the craziest and had the most surprising events. I'm glad the story became more unpredictable and interesting. I can honestly say that I never could have predicted where the story was going to end up. And I love that about this series.
Overall, I do think that I enjoyed the first book more just because of Ivy's craziness level. She definitely did some crazy things in Antidote. But I just wanted more madness in the second book. There were definitely one or two people who I wanted to see get what they deserved. However, that said this was a very interesting sequel and conclusion to a very impressive series. If you want a sweet heroine then this book is not for you. But if you want to read something different, original and addictive then I would definitely recommend this duet!
Honestly, to begin with I was thinking that there is no way that Emily could get more crazy, but boy was I wrong. She is seriously a loon and I didn't know if I should take her seriously. Her inner thoughts are a bit juvenile at times, but let's be real. We all think some of the same things she does ("do I have a booger?", etc). She goes through great manipulations to win over the man that was her childhood love, but is it all worth it? Will he ever find out what she has done to try and achieve her goals?
"I want to do every bad..thing I can think of with Emily, because being with her feels so good."
Brooks and Emily and all the side characters are integral to the wrap up of this story. Emily/Ivy pulls out all the stops and she takes it beyond anything that you could think of in my opinion. Makes you think how far you would go to get what you want. Is she that crazy or is it something completely different?
I like where Lauren took this story. It was crazy. It was cool. It was a story wrapped in lies wrapped in truth. It was unexpected but with just the right amount of mystery that kept you guessing but felt obvious at the same time. I felt for this girl that had been hurt in the past, but wanted to hate the woman she became. But she made it kind of hard because I DID know her past. I understood her struggle and her want to be someone. But at the same time, I wanted to strangle both Brooks and Emily and just tell them about all the games and see where everything would fall. Because lies catch up with you and happiness doesn't follow lies, right?
"This is strictly for me, all me. My therapy. My medication. My destruction of the love I have left for a man who doesn't love me back."
Looking for a story that keeps you hanging and is a bit twisted? This is it! A duet that leaves you guessing and rooting for the crazy.
With alternating points of view the reader gained a better understanding for the behaviors and reactions of these characters. With elements of manipulation, lies, revenge, and jealousy this story had the recipe for a wicked good time.
Lauren's choice of words were priceless. "Something hard is pressed against my lip. I wish it were his dick, but it’s a cup." This quote was one of many that had me cracking up.
The best words I can use to describe this book are clever, original, and unique. Not
to mention the twist and turns. Let's not forget the shocking revelations.
The supporting cast of characters were as equally entertaining as the main characters. None of them surpassed the extreme entertainment Emily provided with her damsel in distress approach for attention, but they certainly brought out the
Emily's character had quite the saucy mouth, spewing all kinds of naughty words about Brooks body parts. I would have loved to quote all her dirty words, but this review would read like a book. Speaking of books, this book gets my upmost recommendation as the craziest and funniest book.
The story was salaciously delicious. The writing spectacular. You will not find another story like this one. Lauren wrote an original masterpiece with unique characters.
She took unconventional to a new level. It's twistedly wicked.
