Where did we come from?

What is our connection with other life forms?

What are the mechanisms of mind that define what it means to be a human being?

Evolutionary psychology is a revolutionary new science, a true synthesis of modern principles of psychology and evolutionary biology. Since the publication of the award-winning first edition of Evolutionary Psychology, there has been an explosion of research within the field. In this book, David M. Buss examines human behavior from an evolutionary perspective, providing students with the conceptual tools needed to study evolutionary psychology and apply them to empirical research on the human mind.

This edition contains expanded coverage of cultural evolution, with a new section on culture–gene co-evolution, additional studies discussing interbreeding between modern humans and Neanderthals, expanded discussions of evolutionary hypotheses that have been empirically disconfirmed, and much more!

Evolutionary Psychology features a wealth of student-friendly pedagogy including critical-thinking questions and case study boxes designed to show how to apply evolutionary psychology to real-life situations. It is an invaluable resource for undergraduates studying psychology, biology and anthropology.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This introduction to one of the most exciting approaches to psychology is the best one out there―authoritative, lively, and balanced. It manages to be both theoretically sophisticated and accessible to a wide range of students interested in human nature and how it got that way."- Steven Pinker, Johnstone Professor of Psychology, Harvard University, USA

"The 6th edition of David Buss’s Evolutionary Psychology: The New Science of the Mind, provides students with a thoroughly updated version of the best evolutionary psychology textbook on the market. I have used several competitors of Buss’s textbook in the past, and none are as successful in inspiring student enthusiasm for the field. Buss is an extraordinarily gifted writer: students consistently report that this textbook is the most interesting textbook they have ever been assigned. Surely some of this excitement is attributable to the fascinating field of evolutionary psychology, but I credit Buss’s remarkable skill as a writer, along with the outstanding organization and presentation of the material." - Todd K. Shackelford, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor and Chair Co-Director, Evolutionary Psychology Lab, Oakland University, USA

Among academics who teach introductory courses in evolutionary psychology, this is widely agreed to be the leading textbook. Dr. David Buss was "there at the beginning," a few decades ago, has been a productive and respected scholar. He has been an academic leader in organizations relevant to this important field of study. This book is comprehensive, interesting to read, and readable. Although a university-type textbook, it is accessible to any reader who Is interested in an in-depth treatment of this field of study. For those who want a quicker overview of this topic, there are many good books for the general public. One very good example, although a bit dated, is "The Moral Animal" by journalist and author Robert Wright.

What I get, not all black and white. There are coloured photos and text in the inside. Not weak paper. Yes, not hard-cover because in this way more easy to travel with the book. Also the weight is light, awesome. Yes, not the cheapest book what you can buy - but I promise, the best. And I read nearly 120 books/ year for years. This is not a price for the information. This is laughable cheap. This is a crystal clear essential information what you want to know. One of the books you HAVE to read in your life to understand what is going on on planet Earth. Good for navigate in life, understanding life, and a lot of other parts like marketing yourself, and understand business things. I highly recommend this book for everyone. Brilliant and fantastic!

the world was, is, and always will be a messy place to live. We are born as IDs (Freud) --King and Queen Babies. We start out very selfish and slowly learn that we must behave (Sapolsky) because the world is a hard master. We can sometimes move into the reciprocity of the Golden Rule. It is an ugly and bad world, but if one starts off knowing the rules, we are better off as individuals and as a group. Buss gives the information as to why this is true. Seek the truth, come whence it may, and go where it will.

Succinct, accessible, and inescapably useful as a tool to understand, at least in part, why people are the way they are. While the debate on "nature vs. nurture" will undoubtedly carry on until long after our species is extinct given our proclivity for reducing complex things down to a binary, if we're going to address the problems we collectively face with any hope of resolving them, we need to understand both through an empirical, rather than ideological filter.

Insightful but also common sense and easy to see if you are aware of your surroundings and are a deep thinker. Very helpful in understanding more about human nature. I always focused on nurture and it's good to also include nature for a more balanced view. I think it's important to see both. I think psychology classes should be mandatory in schools. Maybe it would help us to develop more understanding and tolerance.

Only textbook I have read cover to cover. Sublime. It explains the female mind better than all the drinking buddies and late night comedians in the world put together. An in-depth look not only at human behavior but the biological motivators behind it. Expertly written and generously supported by citations. I rented it for a class but I bought it because I loved it.

Contrary to a previous review above, my paperback edition is of very high quality, in color, and in sharp black and colored print. The content supports Buss' highly regarded national reputation. His previous publisher, Pearson Education, apparently dumped his text along with six of my own texts, and thousands of others, when the text market crashed after 2008. Other publishers picked his and mine up. His publisher, Routledge, has done a better print job than mine. If you somehow got an inferior copy, send it to Routledge and ask to exchange it for a good one.

O Sr. Steven Pinker o elogiou significativamente. Recomendo.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gold mine.
Reviewed in France on September 28, 2021
This book is a gold mine. The author explores deeply the evolutionary and psychological mechanisms that lead to our attitudes in the 21st century. Particularly interesting for understanding the long and short term strategies of both sexes. Also, there are pictures, charts, boxes and sidebars; all items that make the reading much more intuitive than in traditional books.

Not only is it useful for studying purpose, but also for every-day life.
Conclusion: This book is worth every € you'll invest in for.

Bonus: I had a little problem with taxes that the seller helped me fix very quickly.
