TRAX XT high friction rubber is formulated to be the highest performing rubber on the market. TRAX-XT has a perfect balance of high friction and edging power on different types of rock and plastic holds while performing consistently over a wide range of temperatures.
Evolv continually works towards being environmentally conscientious and sustainable. We realize that due to the nature of manufacturing we can never be fully green, but we strive to do our best to minimize harm to the environment. With this goal in mind, evolv and TRAX Rubber have developed eco-TRAX, a recycled content high friction rubber compound and started using it on products beginning Fall 2008, making evolv the first climbing shoe company to use a more environmentally friendly rubber on climbing shoes.
The technology comes from decomposing selective pre & post consumer rubber waste and then reprocessing it to make a useable compound. Currently, 30% of the eco-TRAX compound used on select parts of outsoles is recycled material, however we plan to use a higher recycled percent compound on other applications that don’t require maximum friction.

the first pair i had i had for a couple of years and took with me on a number of trips to the various national parks of the wear, it's a really comfortable shoe that's great for scrambling, they really did great for me when i was down in the south west, running atop and among the sandstone calico cliffs and formation of places like Utah and eastern California..they did get a little bit warm as these are padded pretty good unlike an actual rock shoe but what do you expect, it's not a rock shoe, lol.
the build quality is here and the comfort is here, the black ver of the shoe looks no different than any other pair of trainers, this is a niche use shoe that imo looks good around town as well, so if you are here looking at approach shoes i'd say these are the way to go if you are doing alot of scrambling in dry condition, been very happy with mine and was super bummed this last time i was down in zion and just had my merrells, these shoes are SO SO much better for jumping around and climbing up and down the rocks out there than any other shoe i've seen out there....because lets be honest you can't just slap a climbing shoe rand on a hiker and call it an approach shoe, i mean i guess you can but why not just use a normal hiker at that point, you're not really gaining that much but if you look at these, these are much much more akin to an actual rock shoe than the others who call themselves approach shoes....kinda funny as well, this was one of the first "approach" shoes to hit the market and now you are seeing them from alot of other companies...all of whom are doing them wrong imo...like i said, i'd just keep wearing my hiking shoes like my moabs or solomon gtx whatevers if that was all that was made, not a big enough difference in design and the rest for the money to be worth it....these on the other hand are completely different than any hikers i have and most other approach shoes on the market...
that said,lol.... these really do look great with a pair of shorts around town too, i tend to wear them more as a fashion item lately than i do as a purely outdoor gear, which is always nice.
also the grey/slate color is a pretty "bright" grey, almost feels like it has a purpleish tone to it, like i'm not saying it's a purple shoe, i'm just saying the slate color is a light slate and does have bit of a hue to it, i personally like it and bought both pairs the same color even though they now make them in black....i'd say the black is the safer choice for most people, but if you are kinda a funky person and can pull things off the slate is fine.
Secondly, I noticed in the feedback the shoe's were undersized. Witch in fact they are, I wear a size 12 and I ordered a 13 and this 13 fit like 12s.
Lastly, I was bummed I had to return them. The back width of the soul was way smaller then normal shoes, in return made for an uncomfortable walking experience.
My left foot measure 7.5 in freedom units, and my right just shy of 7.3/4. Every other shoe I own is an 8-8.5, which usually leaves about 1/2" of space between my big toe and the front of the foot bed.
Unlike every other shoe I've tried on, the literal measurement of my foot is the perfect size in this shoe, weird.
Primarily choose these as approach shoe, but their versatility wins out. I've used them for a volcano trek (8+hrs), gym shoes and travel shoe for aircraft.
Only one complaint, and it's minor, as noted by others the seam in the back of the shoe on the heel is a little annoying until the shoes are worn in. Evolv please fix on your next model.
