Let's start with the negative. The DLC is very microtransaction esque. You pay for the colors of guns. Yeah its dumb, but it has been fixed. Every weekend the community works together to unlock new and different skins for free just by playing, not to mention you unlock elite skins also just by playing. That's the only negative mark left on this game.
Yes there is hunter and monster dlc. You have to pay to use them, but you can play with them on your team and against them for no cost. Quite frankly once you find the beauty in the amount of work they have put into balancing the dlc characters, you will be throwing money at them wanting more. Its a positive for me.
The game also features a steep learning curve, which could be viewed negatively. You cant play the game like a spastic 12 year old in a cod match. Playing your role as monster or hunter requires practice, thought, and care. Something seen rarely in todays die, respawn, kill, die, respawn, kill, kill, die, respawn shooters.
The base game comes with12 hunters and 3 monsters which will keep you entertained long past your dollar per hour mark. Assuming you enjoy the base game to begin with, which is really what it boils down to.
This is lost in the fray more than anything. The gameplay of evolve. Buried under drama and mindless hate is a a game so varied, and so delicately balanced it puts every other multiplayer co op experience to shame. I could spend hours detailing every possible scenario any given match could lead too, but doing so would be long winded and most likely wasted on the half brains who come on here just to say "gaem sucks becauze day1 dlc any1 says else is a shill". To call it repetitive isnt a sign of the games failings, its a mark of a bad player. Yes, the game features endless chasing of the monster, IF you cant catch it. As a trapper it is your job to predict where the monster is going by using tracks, support abilities, animal carcasses, fallen trees, and my favorite; positional audio that a nice pair of headphones will provide. Cutting off the monster and spotting him blending in to the brush are how you catch a monster. You are running 90% of the time becausr either you or your trapper sucks. The mechanics are there and they are rewarding. Yes the hunters are op, if you dont know how to sneak, evade, or ambush as the monster. Yeah, you see same hunters and monsters in each match, but if that is a problem, you have already missed the point. Creating tactical perfection as the hunters is beautiful. Finding a hole in those tactics and exploiting it as the monster is key to winning and satisfying as all hell.
Evolve is game that is ripped to shreds at face value because it is misunderstood and its not an easy game to pick up and play, which is why L4D succeeded. There is no watered down campaign here, and evolve is better for it because it knows exactly what it is and it hits its mark perfectly. There is no instant gratification here, but let me tell you, when you win. You feel that win for days. Happy hunting.
Additional info. I played the ps4 version multiplayer, AND I DONT USE A MIC. The skill system keeps things fair, and as long as you play your role correctly, mics arent needed. You wont be a pro though without good communication, there are plenty of mic users as well. I also find it very ironic with people saying that devs are greedy, and in the same breath demanding that the game be free. :) You silly kids. Go attack the Call of Duty reviews or Destiny now. Since they are games that actually divide communities and render your game useless if you dont buy the dlc. Hypocrites
Tries to force longevity with new characters and unlocks but depends on length of games and skill of teammates.
Some game only last a few minutes due to a mediocre monster player. If you don't land a lot of hits with each weapon your character has it will take a lot longer to level up and earn the new character in each class. This game also has it's dull moments, tracking the monster with a useless AI hunting "dog" in Daisy, can make finding the monster a much more daunting endeavor.
