I'm only about 1/3 through, and can't wait to get back to the story each night. Even though this is a young adult book, I still find it holds my interest. The Evolved takes place in England, as do all of Jenner's books. Max tells of an awakening after 7 years in a drugged state; his parents have kept him tranquilized to keep him "safe." You see, Max is one of The Evolved. And in the New World, that is a dangerous thing.
I'll update my review after finishing the book. But if you have a chance, please look for the Ethan Justice series.
In an age when the government controls what you wear; what you can display on your walls; and even what profession you follow; speaking your mind can be dangerous. Now imagine this group of people who have exceptional physical strength, lighting fast speed, and out of this world intelligence. Once you wrap your mind and imagination around that, realize that all of these people are not good guys and that others are good guys who must do bad things to their own kind in an effort to balance power. Sit yourself down and get ready to experience deceit, bullying, mind control, budding romance, kidnapping, murder, and not one bad guy, but more. Follow Max, one of the newest of the evolved to grow into his abilities. Max’s powers showed up a whole lot sooner than those of the rest of his kind, so his parents keep him subdued through medication. For seven years he endures being poor and picked on while his wealthy friends stand up for him. When these same friends give him a dose of medicine before the appointed time, he realizes what he has missed for those seven years and turns out to be the strongest of all around him as far as power is concerned. It seems that everyone around him, including his parents, has been living a lie, and even if it was for his own good, he is less that pleased.
I picked this book up and absolutely could not put it down! Simon Jenner has the most unique imagination and this adventure will take you on a breath taking roller coaster ride. Who are the bad guys and what do they want? How can The Evolved remain hidden until the time is right, and whom can they trust? Read how these gifted children face almost impossible odds to save the ones closest to them and rid society of one of the most gifted yet the most evil of their kind. I was glad when the bad guy got what he had coming, but just like weeds, another villain popped right on up to take his place! Do not miss this story. I finished it days ago and I am still thinking about it and I hope Mr. Jenner has the sequel in the pipeline because I need more! Highly recommended reading.
This makes the fourth Jenner book I've read and I have enjoyed all of them. I got started on the Ethan Justice series and was hooked by the first few paragraphs of book 1. If you will read the Justice series in order you will see how Jenner develops in his writing skills. By the time you read The Evolved you will see that Simon wears the role of the good author like a second skin.
This is a YA book but that doesn't matter. I was so into this one that I would forget what time it was...it is that good. The book starts out in one period of time and then jumps forward several years and Simon does an excellent job of painting the picture and filling the reader in on all of the changes that have taken place. While I was reading this section I kept thinking of Marty McFly in Back to the Future II where he was so amazed at the changes that have taken place in his town. I cannot tell you enough how much Simon Jenner has developed in his writing. His descriptive skills were always good but now it seems that he is writing on another level. His books deserve to be place on the shelf with more well known authors and The Evolved just goes the extra step in proving that point. I did not know what to expect with this being a YA book, I was thinking it would be more along the lines of Harry Potter or Percy Jackson but The Evolved blew past them. I really like the Justice series but I liked this book so good that it wouldn't offend me if Jenner took a break from the Justice series and focused on getting out the final two books in this trilogy. Again, this is a really good book and I enjoyed every page of it.

Max is a likeable character, at once naive and highly gifted. Being thrust into his full powers is like experiencing a mega-puberty within two or three days. His reactions are funny and rather endearing. However, the story is a gripping one with a suitably evil rival and the end was an exciting ride. This is the first in a series and I'll certainly be looking out for the second.
This book us a revelation, the first of hundreds that I have read that didn't contain any errors.
By the spelling alone, I am guessing that this is an English author and that he has his manuscript proofread.
I can usually guess who the 'bad egg' is but the author led me somewhat up the garden path.
I could not put this book down. I was gutted to find that this was a trilogy.....my interest was held all the time . Great story line that had twist and turns to keep you interested.
One of the best books I have read.
The characters are well written and draw you in.
