Matthew Hawkins was not ready to be done with Football- but his life long team was done with him- opting for younger,
uninjured replacements. So when the Washington Wolves are willing to take a chance on him - the last thing he expects to find in the front office is his ex-fiancés little sister. Always having a soft spot for her, the sexy, take no bull, vixen, who half the team is scared of, is not what he expected. Ava Baker loves her job, loves her team but anything involving her family is a painful, torturous event she’d rather avoid. So when Matthew waltzes into her office, surrounds her in a giant bear hug, she’s knows she is screwed and the wall she had built up around her heart doesn’t stand a chance.
The chemistry and past history between Matthew and Ava lead to some difficult situations and some sizzling moments as well but I loved every minute of it. I seriously needed a giant hug from Matthew as well to make it through certain scenes. I feel like a hug from a giant man like him could solve any problem. I have to admit though that I was pissed at Ava towards the end of the book - she made some mistakes that I could see coming from a mile away and I knew they would blow up in her face. Her family always made her feel like second best and she let that dictate her actions- just like they wanted. I was glad to see her finally stand up to them and make her voice and opinions known - she is a powerful, important woman and didn’t deserve to be overlooked. I got chills reading the final chapter- I love when it all comes together and plays out like I hoped. 5 Stars for me!
I have all the heart eyes and smiles after reading this one. I'm seriously considering a massive binge read...
I loved the way the characters complimented each other. There was lots of steam and a great amount of humor.
I honestly felt like I was watching a brilliant Rom Com unfold in front of me.
Excuse me while I go one click every single book that this author has written because HOLY CRAP can she WRITE!
Although The Bombshell is still my favorite, The Ex Effect was also a beautifully written story about two people losing their way, only to find their path back to each other.
This story is emotional, but also funny and full of quirks. I loved Ava's sassiness and confidence she has in what she's doing. And Matthew was incredibly sweet!
And Logan! Uff, I NEED his book. Like yesterday!
If you're a fan of Susan Elizabeth Phillips, you'll love Washington Wolfs by Karla Sorensen.
I loved book one (The Bombshell Effect) of this series. It was dreamy and not so perfectly perfect. But this book, The Ex Effect, wow!!! It's a whole new ballgame! (You can smirk at that, I won't tell!)
It may be the same team (mostly) but this is a whole different play. A Hail Mary of epic proportions. The Ex Effect is filled with the stuff that makes us readers crazy:
- Terrible family dynamic that makes you both insane and want to drink copious amounts of alcohol even though they aren't yours
- History. Seriously dramatic history. Hard to get past history.
-Feels. Damn it. You aren't getting out of this book without an emotional connection.
-hope. Tons of motherfluffing hope. The stars in your eyes, googly eyed kind
And let's not forget for men in tight pants who grunt and workout a lot flexing their insanely hot muscles... (What!?! It's a legit point.) I won't even have to point out that they are some of the sweetest, sexiest specimens in football. Nope. You know it. I know it. And if you're caught up you can help me portion for a certain silent and bloody guy to get his story. Lord knows we can't ask him. He'd never volunteer it. 😉

It's a sports romance, but you don't need to know anything about the sport in question (it's American Football so as a Brit I have no knowledge but it didn't stop my enjoyment).
It's also a second chance romance but that's a bit of a misnomer. Matthew was engaged to Ava's sister ten years ago. She had a crush on him but she never had a chance with him at that time. After her sister cheated on and dumped him, he later married but is now divorced.
Now he's playing for the team that Ava works for and this is her one chance to find out what she was missing out on. And Matthew is looking for third time lucky.
I picked this book up on free offer after discovering Karla Sorensen through her writing for Smartypants Romance, and was not disappointed. Couldn't put this book down.
Ava and Matthew are not strangers to one another when they meet as employees of the Washington Wolves. Matthew as a new player brought to the team from down south, minus a Super Bowl Win, and Ava as PR guru for the Wolves. Oh no, Matthew and Ava met and knew one another from a lifetime ago ... when Matthew was engaged to Ava’s perfect sister Ashley many moons ago. And of course he was her first crush.
Back to the present and it isn’t long before the attraction starts to burn between Matthew and Ava, how will their romance fare with the drama her family will inevitably bring?
The Ex Effect is a wonderful story written with Karla Sorensen’s trademark humour and light, smooth flowing with characters you fall in love with, with just enough longing to keep the reader turning the pages desperate for a HEA. A growing chemistry flows from the pages and we as readers know we are in for a treat with the romantic journey these two embark upon. Sweetness and certainly some steam enhances the plot and makes this the perfect read for fans of sports and contemporary romance.
A 5 star read for me and I am looking forward to reading Paige and Logan’s book next!
