Outstanding Commentary. Buy it now. I'm a missionary in Taiwan and this has really ministered to me both personally and professionally. Great insights, but more importantly the illustrations and applications to life are very relevant. This is exactly what a commentary should be. I also have enjoyed James Hamilton's other book on Salvation through Judgement. Great author.

Would you preach sermons from Ezra and Nehemiah? I have spent my entire life in Southern Baptist churches, and only remember hearing five sermons from Nehemiah — three during revival week as a teenager and two this summer at Sojourn Community Church. That means I have listened to roughly 1,500 sermons in my lifetime and only five of them, to my recollection, exposited the text of Ezra and Nehemiah.

“By faith Ezra and Nehemiah were used of God to advance God’s kingdom by provoking, preserving, and adding to the hope for a glorious eschatological restoration when the Messiah would reign,” writes James M. Hamilton Jr. in his new book, Exalting Jesus in Ezra and Nehemiah, which seeks to rectify the lack of faithful biblical exposition on these seemingly insignificant Old Testament narratives.

Hamilton, associate professor of biblical theology at Southern Seminary, contributed to the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary series with sermons he delivered in 2010 at Kenwood Baptist Church, where he is the senior pastor. Hamilton’s edition is comprised of seven sermons from Ezra, nine sermons from Nehemiah, and a closing sermon on the messianic hope evident in both books.

Each chapter includes a main idea, structural outline of the passage, historical context, exegesis, application, and discussion questions. The accessible arrangement and the clarity of Hamilton’s writing provide the reader with not only a helpful study guide but also an instructional model for sermon preparation.

In his messages on the book of Ezra, Hamilton demonstrates the sovereignty of God in using insignificant people to play significant roles in his cosmic drama and the centrality of Scripture enabling God’s people to prosper.

The Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary Series is a new commentary series from Holman Reference edited by David Platt, Daniel Akin and Tony Merida. The editor's goal is "to present an easy reading, practical and friendly commentary" and "to exalt Jesus from every book of the Bible." In the introduction the editors lay out four distinguishing characteristics for the series. They are: 1) This series seeks to display exegetical accuracy. The desire is to handle God's Word faithfully, even while every volume may not be verse-by-verse commentary. 2) The series has busy pastors in view by presenting its material in a readable, pastoral style rather than academic. 3) A desire to be known for the "inclusion of helpful illustrations and theological driven applications. 4) To exalt Christ in every book of the Bible. They carefully state that, "we are not commending wild allegory or fanciful typology. We must be constrained to the meaning intended by the divine Author Himself, the Holy Spirit of God. However, we also believe that the Bible has a Messianic focus, and the authors in this series will exalt Christ from all of their texts." Some of the authors that will contribute to this series that is projected to be 48 volumes are: David Platt, Daniel Akin, Tony Merida, Al Mohler, Eric Mason, Mark Dever, Russ Moore, Matt Chandler, Francis Chan, Thabiti Anyabwile, J.D. Greear and Paige Patterson. This is a very respectable list of pastors and authors to contribute to this series.

The volume Exalting Jesus in Ezra and Nehemiah is authored by James Hamilton Jr., Associate Professor of Biblical Theology at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY, and preaching pastor at Kenwood Baptist Church.

Along with Derek Kidner's commentary on Ezra-Nehemiah this is other commentary I have fallen back onto while studying and preaching through Nehemiah. Why I value this work especially is because of its Christological focus.
