I'm very happy with this. More so than I expected.
One thing to note. My phone had a problem where even if I set the phone to only use data for internet access, when i connected to the adapter i lost internet access completely. That's the motivation in buying this.
After having both I am much happier with the bluetooth. no more messing with connecting to the WIFi and disconnecting from my home network if I'm in the garage checking things.
The thing I was concerned with most was how fast it updates. To my surprise I see no slower communication than with the $40.00 version. Since both are cloned ELM327 It does everything I need it to.
Highly recommend! for the price it's unbeatable
I use this device with Torque app for Android.
It hooks up through Bluetooth and automatically reads the device.
Don't leave it plugged in when not being used because it uses some of the car battery when the car is not running so this will eventually lead to battery problems.
Torque is a quality app to use also. It can do everything I need it to do.
I've cleared multiple codes when my check engine light has come on and you can look up whatever the code is straight from your phone in the app and it goes to the internet and to a page that explains the code to you.
No more leaving the house to go to the auto store and use their device in the rain, sleet and snow!
A very good investment for every person that owns a car and its under $20 bucks and can be used the rest of your life on all your vehicles current and future so you definitely need to get this. Worth its weight in gold if you get a serious blinking check engine light and can't drive to the store to use their device.
I gave it 5 stars despite the bad CD because I am happy with its ease of use.
***Update 12/4/14 The bluetooth no longer works. I got a good 8 uses out of it before it stopped. I deducted 3 stars for the low number of overall uses. Does anything from China work more than a few months?
I found myself in an unusual situation where the check engine light was on and I needed it reset periodically while I tried to trouble shoot the issue causing the check engine light to come on in the first place. I had previously been using a cheap hard wired OBDII scanner which proved difficult to use due to the short cord and the fact that multiple key presses were needed to get the point where I reset of the vehicle computer could be performed.
I was looking for something simpler to use and that was also WIRELESS so I wasn't tied to a 3 foot long cord hanging out from under the dash. That's when I found the Vgate OBD Super Mini BT ELM327 V2.1 Bluetooth OBD2 by doing a product search here on Amazon.
I started out with the free .apk for Android, Torque (Lite). Although it did connect and had no trouble resetting the vehicle computer (turning off the check engine light), it required someone to tap icons on the screen every time I needed the system reset. I found out AFTER this project was completed that I could automate this process by using another .free apk called FRep, although the learning curve to set this up took more time than I had at the moment. This also is a way to get the MAC adr. of your particular Bluetooth OBD device. More on that in a bit...
That's when I turned to my favorite little device, the raspberry Pi3 which I also bought here on Amazon complete with 7 inch LCD monitor. Best part of it is it only took ONE LINE OF CODE to do what I wanted:
I started out by trying to have the raspberry Pi3 connect to the OBD device in the usual manner. Although it had absolutely no difficulty in doing so, the connection produced the following error code, "Connection failed - No usable services on this device". But more importantly, I was able to find the MAC adr of the device from this failed connection.
I then wrote the following ONE LINE code:
watch -n 60 "sudo rfcomm bind /dev/rfcomm0 11:22:33:AA:BB:CC 1 && echo "04" > /dev/rfcomm0 && sleep 5 && sudo rfcomm release 0 && echo -OK-"
You will need to change 11:22:33:AA:BB:CC to the MAC address of your particular device. The watch -n 60 is what executes the rest of the statement "sudo rfcomm bind /dev/rfcomm0 11:22:33:AA:BB:CC 1 && echo "04" > /dev/rfcomm0 && sleep 5 && sudo rfcomm release 0 && echo -OK-" every 60 seconds. You can either run that line of code (WITHOUTH THE QUOTES) directly from the command line or change watch -n 60 to however often you need to run the following line of code.
If you need to debug the code you can break it into separate lines where the && occur and run it in LXterminal to see where it is failing.
echo "04" is the code fed to the OBD device that tells the vehicle computer to RESET and turn off the check engine light. You can change this code to whatever you need to send to the vehicle computer.
This turned into a GREAT learning experience for me thanks to the raspberry Pi3 and the Vgate OBD Super Mini BT ELM327 V2.1 Bluetooth OBD2.
THANK YOU Vgate, raspberry Pi, and Amazon for making these products available.
