This book is laid out nicely. Former VP Cheney (and make no mistake about it, it's all him), presents his case, provides some historical background to support his position, and the book is very well organized, to support his position.
But this is really just a dressed up defense of his, and former president George W. Bush's policies. And by that, to put it into context, you need to read Cheney's "In My Time". While he did acknowledge that Senator McCain had a right to run his own campaign, he felt that McCain should have been defending the Bush/Cheney record and running on that.
So this books is basically that defense, that NOBODY else will do. Yes, he does dress it up with a lot of history, much of it over the top. For example, right out of the gate (page 2) he quotes ans AEI "scholar" (AEI, big surprise), as saying that we are "the one essential country."
Yes you read that correctly. We are the "I Am" of nation states (and for those of you who don't get that reference go look up what "I Am that I Am" actually means, it's God's way of saying that he exists because he must, otherwise there can be no existence. You know "essential") . So in Cheney's view, the United States is the "I Am" of nation states as his starting point.
This is not to say that we haven't done some great things in the world. To be sure we have. On the other hand, I'm reminded of a couple of things that my grandma told me. The first one was, when she was making me some great silver dollar pancakes, she let me know, that no matter how thin she made them, there were always two sides to them. She also told me to watch out for people who spend a lot of time telling you how great they are, because they usually aren't.
Substantively, that is this book in a nutshell. Cheney establishes that the United States is the "essential" nation state in the world; the YAHWHEH of nation-states if you will. Then spend two chapters (selectively) pointing out what a blessing we are to the world, then uses the rest of the book to basically defend his and W.'s abysmal foreign policy decisions starting in 2003.
And oh. Obama got elected and the whole thing just went to s***.
