It will literally take you minutes (even seconds) to find them when you could be hunting around for hours. With amazing accuracy you will be guided to within an inch/2.5cm whether you are indoors or out even in complete darkness. Included within the pack are four Splashproof cases to help keep the Tags dry and give you the choice of how you prefer to attach the Tag. WHAT'S IN THE BOX
Well, I have been thoroughly impressed. The Pet Locator comes with two tiny tags, two splash covers, two PetSplash cases and a locator. I can buy up to two more tags to use with my locator. There are four buttons on it. Each tag can be programmed to one button.
I am absolutely amazed at the tiny size of the tags. I do not have to worry about size at all. They are about 1 3/16 inches long, weighing in at 0.005 ounces. With the splash cover, they about 1 5/16 inches long (not counting the loop for the tag) and 0.015 ounces.
The PetSplash case is bigger. The tag and PetSplash case together are 2 3/8 inches long and 0.020 ounces.
The locator itself is about the size of a credit card, just a bit thicker. It comes with a holder and a magnet that I promptly mounted to the refrigerator.
The tags can be used without a cover on a keyring loop. There is an option to use them with a splash cover or PetSplash case to prevent damage from incidental water exposure. The case and covers are nice, thick and rubbery, which helps provide protection for the tags. The splash cover has a loop that can be used to dangle the tag from a collar or keychain.
For those who want the tag to remain flush with the collar, the PetSplash case can be used. The tag fits inside, and the collar threads through the case. The setup reminds me of bark collars, but it's good if the tag might dangle in the water when your pet drinks.
There are two issues to consider with the covers:
1) The loop on the splash cover looks like it would break easily when used on a keychain. On a collar, it may not be a problem, because it would not get pulled often.
2) The PetSplash case will not fit a wide collar. In fact, the case will barely fit my kitten's Flower Frenzy Cat Collar, 3/8-Inch Wide, Adjustable 8-12, Pink. If your pet has a wide or thick collar, the case may not fit.
My last key locator worked by activating the tag, making it beep loudly and I had to go searching the house to find the beep. This locator works by flashing lights and sound to point me in the right direction. The Pet Locator tag does beep, but it's a soft beep and difficult to hear.
My house is 3600 sq. ft. I tried placing my keys all over the house and once put it under the covers upstairs at the other end of the house to see if my locator could find it. Yes, it did. When I was downstairs, it beeped in the direction of the keys and directed me upwards. Just remember to point the locator up, down, and around when you're in a two-story house.
I tried the product outdoors. With the Pet Locator in the backyard, I went to the front yard. I received a faint signal. I tried a direct line of sight and measured its limit at 160 feet.
+ tags and locator are very small and lightweight
+ locator indicates direction of the signal
+ will work in a large house through walls and floors
+ comes with two splash covers and two PetSplash cases
+ 2 year warranty
- tag does not beep loudly (this is a PRO if you are using this on pets with sensitive ears)
- limit of 160 feet direct line of sight (less than the advertised 400 feet)
- loop on splash cover looks like it may not take the stress of being pulled on a keychain
- PetSplash case doesn't fit wide collars
This is the best key locator system I've ever used. And yes, it's perfect for locating that darned cat.
UPDATE: I've had this for a year and it's still going strong. It's been so useful to me, especially when my cat decides she wants to go sleep in a box or behind the television, or when I'm late for work and can't find my keys.
I needed to change the batteries recently, because the batteries in one of the tags died. I bought 10 390 / 389 Energizer Watch Batteries SR1130SW Cell. They fit and it works. My tags are back in action.
UPDATE: It's been two years. I still use this product and it still works. The only thing I've had to replace is the batteries and one of the little cords that I used to attach the tag wore out. This has saved me numerous headaches looking for my keys and cat. Great product.
UPDATE 4/19/13: Three years and still one of the best gadgets I've ever bought. It's working like the day I got it. What a wonderful timesaver when I can't find my cat or my keys.
UPDATE 3/11/14: Still use this regularly to find my keys and my cat.
UPDATE 9/26/14: The tag on my key ring is at the end of its life. The one on my cat is still going strong. It makes sense. I drop and throw my keys everywhere. That tag is heavily abused. I'm surprised it's lasted as long as it has. Off I am to buy a new set of tags.
UPDATE 5/21/17: This will be my final update. Over the past year, the handset has been getting stickier and stickier, like I spilled juice all over it, except I didn't. Today, it finally died. Seven years is a long run. I'm out to buy another one, but I can't find this model anywhere. Guess I'll buy TabCat Pet Tracking Locator Lite instead. Hope the little tags from my old set work with the new TabCat handset.
So in our previous summers together, I would constantly watch him and when he escaped (at least twice a day) I would run amok to find his whereabouts. I'd take him out for walks with a leash which happened to be torturous rather than pleasurable for the both of us. In short, my summer holidays were tiresome and frustrating for I was constantly watching my disabled cat who wanted to run away and explore the world outside in every opportunity.
Until I ordered the Loc8tor this year. At first I was sceptical because of the negative reviews but I had no other alternative because this one was the only locator that worked outside of US. (I live in Turkey)
Thanks to the Loc8tor, I leave my cat alone, he climbs up the fences and goes wherever he likes. I don't worry a bit because in every couple of hours I locate him in a matter of minutes and bring him back into our garden. When the signal shows that he is close, the beeping sound on his collar's tag (as well as the bell I hung on his collar) is of great use to locate him. And the tag is very lightweight, my cat is relatively skinny, he doesn't seem to mind it hanging down his neck.
It gave my disabled cat all the freedom he needs and made my life hundred percent easier. I'm simply greatful.
Update: after about 2 years with this product we have replaced the batteries only twice, and it has helped us find an escaped kitty many many times... I agree with some reviewers that the signal is not extremely long; but in the past two weeks alone I have been able to catch a signal outside on my cat and eventually find him when he was over four houses, well over 100 feet away... It was only one light and didn't go up to more until I had gotten significantly closer; but I still found him with this little doo-dad. My immediate strategy has become when I start the search I immediately go to the corners of my lot, and hold the receiver high in a slow arch/circle to give it as much of a bird's-eye view as possible.
