As a Christian, I have always been taught the "Penal Substitution" theory of atonement--we fall short of God's standard and deserve eternal condemnation as a result. But because God loves us, he sent Jesus, an innocent God/man, to die for our sins, thus making a way for us to have eternal life with him.

I have lived and breathed this theory and have only recently become aware that it is a relatively recent theory( last 500 years) and that historically there have been other theories much more prominent in the church, including the "Christus Victor", "Satisfaction" and "Moral Example" theories. Baker has one chapter devoted to discussing the merits and shortcomings of all four of these theories. This chapter alone is worth the price of the book.

But Baker's main concern is with violence, specifically violence perpetrated by God. Two of the above theories, penal substitution and satisfaction, postulate that God required an innocent men to die a violent death in order to pay for our sins. Although anyone with any knowledge at all of current events and/ or history might need little convincing on this, she spends time detailing how if we believe God used violence to redeem the world we are more likely to justify using violence to defend God and his kingdom. She believes this cycle of violence will continue unless our image of God changes.

She then spends the bulk of the book discussing divine justice and forgiveness and develops an alternative way to interpret the sacrifice of Jesus that does not rely on God's requiring the violent death of an innocent man for us to be forgiven and reconciled to him.

A great book! It is by far the best book on the Atonement that I have ever read. Sharon Baker deals powerfully with the love of God in Jesus as central to the Gospel as well as the issue of divine justice. I highly recommend this work to Christians and non-Christians. I am inviting all my friends to read this incredibly exciting book. You won't be disappointed! (The Rev. Dr. Charles R. Colwell)

This is a fabulous read!

I love it when theology professors explain multiple theories and viewpoints and then provide the strengths and weaknesses of each view before clearly providing an alternate option. My theology professor lectured this way and I thrived in his classes!

Baker tackles another controversial idea (previously, she debated hell) with the theological theory of atonement.

Now before you move on to another review, please understand that this book does not read at all like a college lecture. Everything about this book is about getting the information/ideas to you quickly and easily. Baker does a great job using everyday language. It almost feels like a conversation you'd have at your coffee table...almost because, come on, she's talking about Atonement!

Some of her theories may cause a few Christians to squirm - "did God send Jesus to die?" "if God forgives, why did Jesus have to die a brutal death? What does that say about forgiveness?" She asks these questions and so many more that kept me reading with joy! I love to be challenged in my long-held beliefs. Just because I may not agree with everything she writes doesn't mean I can't thoroughly enjoy her writing.

The basic premise for this book is Baker's faith in Jesus as the best representation of God. And if Jesus is the best representation of God, then how do we reconcile the God of compassion, love, and forgiveness we find in Jesus and the God who demands payment(death) in order to extend his forgiveness?

Proponents of substitutionary atonement theories will not enjoy this book. They may even deem Baker a heretic. But you have to give this book a shot. It would do any Bible scholar as well as general seeker good to explore the ideas presented here.

This is a fantastic book. It is going on my list of books that every Christian should read.

In a down-to-earth and intensely practical writing style, Sharon Baker shows the problem with traditional understandings of the atonement and the violence of God, and reveals an alternative way of looking at the cross of Jesus and the violence of God in the Bible.

I have been reading and studying these issues for several years now, and this book is one of the two or three books I would highly recommend to anyone who wants to begin studying the atonement or the violence of God in the Bible in more detail.

Sharon presents a view of God which allows us to see Him as completely loving and nonviolent, as one who suffers with us in our pain. Read this book and understand God in a the light of Jesus Christ!

Sharon Baker has successfully bridged the gap between theologian and wo/man on the street. Her writing style is such that just about anyone can grasp the concepts she's introducing in this book. None of that is to say that this is a small feat. This is an amazing book and would serve anyone from youth to the aged in a beginning understanding of non-violent atonement.
