This patent means that they have a monopoly on selling these two items together until 2023. However, nothing is to stop you from purchasing a metal collar stay and some tiny powerful magnets. Indeed, many have done so. If you scroll up and look at the items customers have purchased, you will see "NeoStays: 30 Magnetizable Metal Collar Stays Size 2.25" 2.5" 2.75" & 3" inch For Dress Shirts" for $7.99 and "30 Neodymium Magnets 1/4 x 1/16 inch Disc N48 By Emovendo" for 6.99. Both are Amazon Prime. This is what I did after purchasing the Wurkin Stiffs and then losing a magnet and I can discern no difference in quality between the Wurkin Stiffs and the above alternative.
To break it down further, you can opt for 1 pair of Wurkin stiffs for $20.00, or 30 pairs of the exact same thing for $14.98. (which works out to $0.49 each, 1/40th of the cost!).
I think that the plastic collar stays that came with my shirts look fine when I wear a tie and have the top shirt button closed. Most times, though, I wear my dress shirts without a tie - and then the collars look a bit loose and sloppy to me. These Power Stays work great to calm my inner control freak. The collars stay in place where I put them, just as if they were button-down collars.
After using these for about two months, I've never had a magnet come off while wearing a shirt at work. I also haven't noticed any signs of additional wear on the shirts where the collars are held in place. I have had the magnets pop off when trying to adjust where the collars are placed, so I now always hold on to the magnets (from the underside of the shirt) while adjusting. Something to keep in mind if you decide to adjust these out in public...or you might be shaking your pants leg and waiting for the magnet to pop out onto the floor. :)
Overall, I recommend these. I like the control, and the price tag isn't bad when you consider that you can wear these for years. You might also consider the three-pack with different lengths. A bit more money, but likely worth it if your shirts have different collar lengths.
They really make your collar look better if you are not wearing a jacket and do not have button-downs. Very cool.
Necessary? No. ;) But very stylin'. :)
A little pricey, I think, otherwise five stars.
I have lost 2/3 since I recieved them. When I am wearing them I find myself checking constantly to see if the magnet is still there. This added hassle does not seem worth it to me.
I will say that if they do stay in place that it does make the shirt look exceptionally good and put together. It looks so good that often people do not notice that you were not wearing a tie.
Please note that I did not receive this in the mail as it was lost in returned to the seller. Amazon promptly gave me a refund. I purchased this from another website for the same price.
I hope this helps.
I recently went from a job in which I wore a tie for over 13 years to a job in which I still need to dress nice, but tie not required. So, rather than purchase a new group of dress shirts with button-down collars, I decided to try these out.
I was worried the magnets wouldn't be strong enough... They're plenty strong. In fact, if you get them too close to each other, it takes a small amount of force to pry them apart!
Bonus? It comes with 3 magnets, so if you lose 1 you have an extra.
A tad pricey, I think, but well worth it.

Does exactly what it is supposed to do. Now if you could figure a way to keep my shirt tucked into my pants, I would greatly appreciate that.Published 1 month ago by Jonathan McCarty

Absolutely love these things. I like the idea of not wearing a tie each day but I hate the way the collar folds out when I don't wear one. These have stopped the problem. Read morePublished 2 months ago by LeeC
