Enhance your purchase
Laugh your way to a better you! For those too busy to go to the gym, try some of the fitness advice provided in this 1908 classic revisited. In today’s challenging business environment, the achieving executive needs every possible advantage, fitness included. If gym fees and personal trainers do not fit into your schedule or budget, Exercises for Gentlemen offers just what the trainer would have ordered. With excerpts and original illustrations from The School of Health—the classic health reference of the early 1900s—here is a "practical course in physical culture" designed as a fitness program not even requiring a pair of exercise shorts, let alone joining a health club. What results is both an entertaining glimpse of times gone by, and an exercise regime ideally suited to the modern man with neither the time nor the inclination to change clothes when he steps out from the busy office. This book contains detailed guidance on everything from knee bends and arm bends to proper posture, bathing, and homeopathic remedies—all to be taken with a suitable dose of humor. A daily regime of a mere fifteen minutes of be-suited exercise is guaranteed to "reduce undue fullness at the waist, square the shoulders, round out the arms, improve leg development, and, in short, make a more graceful, strong, and symmetrical man."

Editorial Reviews
Review
"This little gem of a book—subtitled 50 Exercises to Do with Your Suit On—brings a cheeky light heartedness to the tiresome task of daily fitness" ~Forbes Life
"Dr. Alfred B. Olsen's cheeky new book explains that not only can one exercise while spiffily attired, but that doing so creates 'a more shapely body and attractive mind and spirit.' Riiight. If you're not sure where to start in this pocket guide, flip to its index and decide if you'd prefer to read about 'malodorous sweat,' or 'cold mitten friction'. Either way, you won't need to shed that Band of Outsiders three-piece to perfect your 'graceful carriage'." ~Nylon
"It happens. You wake up in Marrakesh with nothing but a suit, a headache and an insatiable desire to exercise. That's where this book comes in—it will teach you 50 different ways to stretch, lift and generally give your body a workout, while wearing formal garb. And should you choose to indulge in the occasional bit of sans-clothes relaxation, there's also a chapter on sponge baths." ~Urbandaddy.com
"...the advice and diagrams dole out here are still practical tips for the manly man and the curious woman." ~Gotryke.com
"Exercises is essentially the men's magazine of a century ago" ~ModernTonic.com
"Quaint but not antiquated, the little illustrations of man-in-suit movements will amuse as well as instruct." ~StyleGoesStrong.com
"The stuff that’s outdated is now humorous, but there is always a surprising amount of wisdom that’s just as true now as it was then." ~ArtofManliness.com

Fun book that is a reprint of information from the early 1900's. It gives a glimpse as to lifestyle back then. Entertaining on many levels.

I was given a little book "Exercises for Gentlemen - 50 Exercises to do with Your Suit On" by Alfred Olsen M.D. and M. Ellsworth Olsen M.A. It was first published in 1908.
As expected, it has lots of exercises. Most not very strenuous (they are supposed to be done in a suit). Mostly they are common sense. Just move - it is healthier. And the book did remind me that you can do exercises almost anywhere and any time. And it reminded me of proper posture and breath.
What I particularly enjoyed were the dated statements made with certainty like:
"Avoid cheap novels and exciting stories" (what does that say about the next 9 days?)
"Unclean fingernails...are suggestive of bad breeding"
"Habits of strict personal cleanliness are the greatest importance in the maintenance of health" (and then goes on to say take a warm bath once a week)
and a section on the Evils of Overclothing:
"too much clothing is likely to interfere decidedly with an alert, vigorous, condition of the body"
It even advocates vegetarianism:
"Much meat excites lust, intemperance and savagery in a man"
Cute little book. Things have changed..

Around the turn of the century, greater emphasis was placed upon men becoming more fit and athletic. Nonetheless, a "gentleman was always a gentleman" and questions arose regarding how both images might be satisfied.
In Exercises for Gentlemen, the reader is instructed in the rewards of physical activity, coupled with proper diet, care of the teeth, nails and skin, massage and bathing techniques, as well as in the benefits of cold compresses and radiant heat treatments. Although the exercise illustrations may appear somewhat dated to our modern eyes, the exercises themselves are still quite beneficial. This book is a must for every well dressed gentleman, both past and present.

The exercises have actually helped me.(I suffer from arthritis.) My sister-in-law tells me that a number of those exercises are the same as praticed by her Golden Age Club. Some of the advice seems influenced by latter-day Puritanism (Note that the original publisher was affiliated with evangelical Protestantism.), such as the advice to take cold baths, practice Fletcherizing when eating, etc., but the exercises do help my flexibility.
