I'm an ER nurse and we use Exergen's temporal artery thermometers in our ER. They are much more accurate than underarm or in the ear, although the gold standard is a rectal temperature, which can be upsetting to children.
I actually wrote my Master's research paper on these thermometers, and here are a few tips in order to use them accurately:
1. run the thermometer from forehead (above the eye) all the way into the hairline. DO NOT LIFT the thermometer at all!!!
2. repeat this 2 more times
3. take the HIGHEST of the 3 readings. It is always important to take the HIGHEST as it is most accurate. There is a chance it didn't read right on the artery so it wouldn't be as high, which is why it is best to do 3 readings.
4. clean the head of the thermometer with a Q-tip and some alcohol occasionally to help it read accurately.
5. If your child is sweaty, the sweat dries off quickly and cools their skin temperature, so it isn't as accurate! In this case, it is better to run the thermometer over their carotid artery on their neck- off to the side of the voicebox. Run the thermometer side to side, and not up and down.
If you follow all of these steps, this thermometer is quick, easy and very accurate. I highly recommend it over any other form of temperature taking for young children.

My biggest worry was how accurate can these be? I am always the skeptic and trust mechanical processes more then electronic ones. Some things we did to try it out.

1.) Test it on me - both readings came out about 98.8 which is good because the average human body temperature is 98.6.
2.) Test it on my wife - we have always known she runs about a degree cooler then the average. We know this because this always occurs during hospital visits or doctor visits, she just runs cooler. We tested it on her three times and it came back about 97.5 which is what we expected.
3.) A sick baby - our daughter's daycare told us yesterday that she was running a 104 degree temperature. They used an in ear thermometer to test her. We picked her up and tried the Exergen on her and consistently came back with a 106 degree temperature. We took her to the ER where the ER nurses tested her using their high end forehead thermometer (like ours, only industrial and hooked to a big machine). It also read at 106 degrees. Routinely through the night they kept taking her temperature using their industrial forehead thermometer. When they would leave the room, I would get up and test her with the Exergen thermometer and it always came back the same temperature as the hospital's readings.

Suffice to say that I very much trust this thermometer to give us an accurate view of our daughter's temperature.

This has been a fabulous product. I guess it is that time of year, but our kids have been sick a lot and we've had the chance to use it several times already. It is soooo much easier to use than any of the other types of thermometers! The kids don't kick and scream, in fact, they think it is kind of a fun way to check their temperature. It only takes about 3 seconds to read someone's temperature. It seems to be very accurate (based on the fact that it reads very close to 98.6 degrees when someone doesn't have a fever).

The unit looks and feels like it is well-made. I consider it one of the best investments we have ever made and I would definitely buy it again if I had it to do all over.

This is my first ever Amazon review, I'm so angry I feel compelled to post. In my opinion, this thermometer is a piece of garbage. Everytime I use it I get a different temp, it is completely unreliable in my experience. Last night my baby was burning up so I used it and it said 99... Unconvinced I used another thermometer and it was 104.

I bought this to use on my one year old daughter. It gives a different temperature every time you use it. I use it 3-5 times and then average the numbers to have an idea what her temperature MIGHT be. I don't understand all the 5 star reviews for a product that is so inaccurate. She is fine with me using this on her one or two times but after a few times she gets annoying with it so that makes it a lot harder to get a reading. The temperature is different by as much as three degrees sometimes. Three degrees is a huge difference. I wouldn't mind if it was .1 or .2 different.

I work as a home health nurse. The thermometer is super efficient and easy to use, but it won't read if it is cold. Once it warms up, it reads just fine. The often leave my nursing bag in the car, and my stuff gets cold for the night. If I warm up the sensor with my finger, I can often get it to read. It is definitely more accurate than other methods of taking a temperature.

This worked okay at first. It wasn't super consistent but usually only varied by a few tenths. Recently my toddler had a raging fever, she was burning to the touch yet this thermometer kept giving me readings of around 98....I used an underarm thermometer and it was 102.3!!!! After that it went in the trash.

Everyone who says it isn't accurate, you're doing it wrong. Read the instructions again..CAREFULLY! Every. Single. Word. Do NOT use on a swaety forehead. Do not swipe it several times in a row. Yes, you should take three samples, but not one right after the other. You've got to give the sensor time to cool and re-adjust to room temp. Both are laid out in the instructions. The instructions explain to you how the exergen works and if you actually take the time to read it, you'll (hopefully) understand why youre getting inaccurate readings. I love our exergen. You'll have to pry it from my cold, dead hand.
