this device does not work!! the temperature it measures is not reliable at all. My child had 106 F fever measured rectal and at the doctor's and this thermometer read repeatedly 99F. really?This could potentially bring your child into great danger not recognizing high temperatures !

I’ve had this thermometer since 2014. I thought it was so accurate...turns out it was way off. Just recently my toddler was sick and according to this thermometer he only had 100 degree fever. This went on for a few days and then I took him to the doctor. I checked his temperature before we left the house and when we got to the doctor 15 mins later it was 103.3. Never over the course of 3 days did this thermometer read over 100. The only reason I took him the the doctor was because I could feel his heart racing...which it was doing because of the severe fever that I didn’t know he had!
I tested this thermometer again against a regular one from Walgreens and it was about 3 degrees under every single time!

I worked in pediatrics for ten years where we used a higher end thermometer but also by this brand. The pediatrician recommended this one instead of paying $400 for the high end. I have been using it for about 8 years with all kids and i love it. I recently lost mine so bought this one as a replacement. Battery lasts a long time and when it dies a plain battery from the dollar store lasts over 6 months. Its very easy to use and very accurate. Very fast to take a temperature and easy even on infants. Only thing, do not take a temp as soon as a person comes in from the outside as the forehead still holds temp of the outdoors and same goes for straight out of a bath or shower. If temp environment has been altered, give it 20 minutes before you take the reading. I highly recommend this product.

I consider myself to be a fairly intelligent person, but I absolutely cannot seem to get this thermometer to scan consistently! I have read and reread the directions, but it only scans one out of ten times. Like other reviewers have said, it will give me such a ridiculous range of temperatures that I can't even guess as to what might be right! I bought this because of the reviews...i mean 3,000+ reviews and almost a 5 star rating! I was expecting it to be golden! What a dud!

Fast & Accurate Readings for Babies and Adults

I got this thermometer for my baby almost two years ago after deciding I wasn't willing to attempt the old fashioned rectal thermometer method for a baby. We have gotten so much use out of this thermometer as a family because it is also quick and convenient for adults to use on themselves. I have not had any trouble getting accurate readings with this, although it does have a small learning curve to get used to the swiping motion across the forehead to the temple.
It seems to be perfectly suited for left and right-handed people as we have one of each in our family. I also trust that it would be a good thermometer for older people to use because it is easy to read the screen and large enough to hold with a fist compared to some of the smaller thermometers requiring exceptional fine motor skills.
I like how the thermometer stores previous results, and how it beeps when it is ready to be scanned so you know you will get an accurate reading. It also has a backlight screen so if you are taking temperatures while baby is asleep, you won't have to turn on a light which is a big win for parents with a sick kid.
This thermometer has held up for nearly two years and I always feel confident in the temperature readings because Exergen is known for quality and accurate results. I highly recommend this thermometer to new parents, or really anyone who wants a fast and accurate temperature reading.

Swiping skills needed!

It's hard to do a smooth swipe completely always on the skin for a baby.
if the baby moves or is sleeping....they will probably wake up and not register the temperature perfectly.
I really like this for sick kids because it gives me a quick read without the waiting and fussing.
I love it for older kids and adults.
If you do it on littles, just make sure for swipe it 2-3 times for an accurate reading.
hopefully my swiping skills get better.

I know it to be easy to use and very reliable. I would have given 5 stars if the scan button had been in the other side. It is on the side that contacts the skin, making it awkward to keep the device in contact with the skin while scanning. Other than that, I am very happy with this thermometer.

I had surgery and was told it was important to watch my temperature. I had an old mercury thermometer and this thermometer. The mercury thermometer always read my temperature under 99. This thermometer read my temperature at over a hundred. This caused me to be a little anxious because I really needed a true reading. A higher temperature meant that I could possibly have an infection.
Went to the doctor and they took my temperature and it was the same as the mercury thermometer-normal. This thermometer is now in the trash. Never gave me a true reading was always 1 to 2 degrees higher. What a waste of money.

This is a positive review but the thermometer only arrived today so this review is based on my initial use of it. I'm a 3rd year BSc nursing student and used to taking observations from patients. Firstly I was really pleased to see that I was sent the newer and updated model which includes the display light ('Smart Glow', they call it) and it also has the 8 memories. It was not clear from the description whether the new or old one would be sent. So I'm really pleased with this new one. The form factor is good, ideal to slip into a backpack or coat pocket. It's light, it should be easily cleaned, there aren't really any bits to break off, the battery compartment lid seems a decent fit and solid, the plastic also seems the type that doesn't shatter. It's a warm feeling non-brittle plastic. As for the operation, it couldn't be easier. The beeps play quickly as it detects a new hotter area so one slow swipe across the forehead seems to give consistent results on me. The 8 memories and display light are a real bonus. I hummed and harred a lot before deciding which thermometer to buy as they all are, in their own way, only a 'surrogate' for the actual core body temperature and all thermometer types have their disadvantages (typmanic: ear wax or blocked/narrowed ear canals give false readings - common with older people?!. Oral: readings very dependant on precisely which spot you place it... etc). I'm very happy with this item and having done a lot of research before buying I can tentatively (because it's so new) thoroughly recommend it with one caveat... read the manual! In fact the manual is quite good with a lot of detail. Normal readings will be higher/different from an oral or under-arm thermometer and I expect that with a fever, the reading will be noticeably higher in proportion than other thermometer types. So long as you understand this it should suit you well. Five stars.

I got this after using a no-touch Braun thermometer that was giving every time a different, and wrong, reading. This is incredibly precise, gives consistent readings and seems built very well. It has a battery included, backlit display to use in the dark, can switch between F and C, and has a memory for the last reading. I would definitely recommend this, especially for babies this is the most precise non rectal thermometer

Bought it for my newborn. My husband and I also use it and we like the simple use and the ability to turn the beeping sound off as it bothered my newborn. You have to use it correctly otherwise it can give you the wrong temperature. But for now we think the results are correct so we will rely on it in the future - for example we tried to measure temperature twice in a row on the same forehead and it always showed the same temperature.

I suggest you don't buy one. My wife and I have each tried dozens of times and neither of us has yet had a normal reading (98.6 deg) The nearest we've got is 97.1 deg. That is unhelpful nonsense.
