There are only two components to reality. What we choose to believe and what we are forced to believe. Reality becomes a slippery slope when technology advances to influence human senses.
Ray Garret becomes a `victim' through an unfortunate series of consequences. His wife is dead and gone but leaves one last chance for him to connect with her. His job as a detective sends him on a chase to find the source responsible for a series of cyberspace related deaths. Ray enters a vast new world controlled by the devilish mind of an evil man. Ray no longer can trust his senses to know what's real and what's not. Time is running out. His choices will determine his future once and for all. Or, is it already too late?
Robert Shane Wilson hits the ball out of the park with this exciting techno-thriller. The narrative is dark and the characters are rich with life. Emotions are agonizingly twisted as reality spirals toward the harrowing conclusion.
Mystery/science fiction/horror fans will all love this read.
The beginning reads like a noir techno thriller - what is Exit Reality and how can it be stopped? - but the story quickly spirals into a hectic paced chase through the city that seemed to abandon the early attempts at characterization and plot in favor of description after description. It races downhill to a rather neat and unsatisfying conclusion.
So why three stars?
There are three things I like about Exit Reality:
1 The first third of the book is compelling and well written. It set up an interesting world and premise, which, although not entirely original, was intriguing.
2 At the beginning of the book something called The Tunnel is introduced, and it sounds a spooky place. Unfortunately, it turns out to be a huge disappointment.
3 The Necro-clubs and Deathheads. These are people who get high from dying in virtual reality. I loved this idea but it had little to do with the plot.
Ray Garret is a cop investigating a series of mysterious cyber-related deaths. All of the victims were alone, the only clue the words "Exit Reality" flashing on a monitor. As he descends into a virtual world, he must choose a path between madness and salvation.
A chilling and challenging mix of sci-fi, horror, noir, and cyberpunk, Exit Reality crosses as many boundaries as its premise. The other question: What choice would you make?
Ray, an Antivii Agent and recent widower, begins to piece the mystery together just as he is offered the chance to have his Wife back. He knows it's too good to be true, but the real world is too dirty and corrupt for him now.
What follows is a journey with more than a passing nod to The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath and other Dreamcycle tales - Lovecraft cited by the Author himself as a great influence. As Ray travels through the hellish mindscape created by Benigan, the despicable tech-tyrant, he encounters all manner of allusory devices, nightmare creatures and tests of his very sanity.
Fast-paced and gritty with detail, this is a brilliant read.
Exit Reality is a great page turning thriller about Garret's transformation from a troubled man into... well something else entirely. This science fiction thriller with horror elements really shows a brilliant blending of several genres that fans have come to expect from Robert S. Wilson.
The wonderfully detailed world that we see here is a great example of storytelling at its finest. The story is engaging and you will find yourself turning pages quickly just to keep up. It is highly recommended for science fiction, thriller, and horror fans. You won't regret adding this to your collection.
