"With The Exo Project, Andrew DeYoung has proven himself capable of entering territory few writers can manage. It’s enough that his debut is a thrilling science fiction story. But add in prose that feels both effortless, yet expertly crafted, and you have the recipe for an astounding novel. And that’s exactly what The Exo Project is astounding. I can’t say enough about this book. It grabs you on the first page and doesn’t let go until the last. It truly is a needed and welcome addition to young adult literature."
--Bryan Bliss, author of Meet Me Here and No Parking at the End Times
“The world building (in the Exo Project) is impeccable, with backstories fully developed…that show the folly and weaknesses of humanity even across the galaxies. The complexities of warring loyalties are played out through the accessible perspectives of Matthew and Kiva…This will be a treat for sci-fi fans looking to settle into a lengthy novel and really explore a futuristic plot.” The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
“The Exo Project has a…fantastical premise that works very well in DeYoung’s execution. (He) does an excellent job of creating a fully-realized society…and he allows the relationship between Kiva and Matthew to develop naturally….the book’s greatest strength is its willingness to take on such issues as climate change, bigotry, sexism, violence, and responsibility for the common good.” VOYA
DeYoung has wrapped a love story in a meditation on gender-based violence….the story offers much to chew on. – Minneapolis Star Tribune
“First-time author DeYoung offers straightforward yet effective storytelling, which makes for a refreshing change from science fiction with convoluted and multilevel plots…. this is an enjoyable read with abundant STEM connections.” -Booklist
“This debut novel will give science fiction readers a fresh take on the genre. Deyoung… presents a great science fiction introduction for those reluctant to the genre.” -School Library Connection

Wow! This book has the feel of an Orson Scott Card book--I trusted DeYoung's writing right away and felt pulled in, wanting to know more about the Exo Project and our protagonist Matthew. I loved the sci fi and world building of this novel--I won't give it away, but I will say that the details we get at the beginning are significant, and pay off in some really surprising, moving realizations. This novel is a powerful call, exhorting our world to change--but also showing the hope that humility and a willingness to listen can bring. A must-read, incredibly relevant book. I hope that we might see a sequel, or additional books set in this world in the future!
On deeper reflection, THE EXO PROJECT grapples with the philosophical question: Imagine you are trapped in a burning building with your sibling and five strangers. You know that you can get out safely, but you can only rescue one group. Who would you save?
Now imagine that burning building is the Earth. You're probably safe, but do you choose to rescue humanity? Or an innocent and peaceful alien civilization? Matthew, the protagonist, has to make that choice while dealing with his growing feelings for Kiva, the leader of the alien society. With lots of wonderful world building and twists, it was easy to follow Matthew and Kiva on their journeys.
