First, the frame that attaches to the camera is very well designed / built. That alone is nearly worth the price of this product. Of course, this is an, add-on optic, used over an existing optic - iphone. So keeping the two lenses concentric is critical for maximizing performance..the frame does a very good job to accomplish this task. (within an acceptable tolerance) Of course, it's mandatory the phone be bare bones, NO CASE, or the lenses will NOT be concentric!
Now, as for optical performance. Lets get real here... these are cell phone cameras to start with...they have limited optical capability. The sensors are tiny, therefore the pixels are tiny, so this too is a limiting factor to a cell phones camera performance. However, if used for small images on the web, the iphone camera performs remarkably well. However, once you push the image size, such as displaying on a 8MP (4K) TV, u will notice some degradation, as u are pushing the limits of the optical chain (lens, sensor, firmware).
Adding a secondary lens can only degrade the image quality even further. As the camera optics was NOT designed to accommodate add-on optics. So the overall lens performance will degrade. This is true even when using secondary optics with high end camera gear, where the secondary optic can cost $500+. Its simply the nature of optics.
However, in return for slight image quality degredation, u gain a 35% increase in capture Angle (Horiz) and about a 3x - 4x telephoto lens. Whenever you have a super wide lens, even those that cost thousands $ , u will have distortion. Again, its the limitation of optics. If you shoot a brick wall, it will be very noticeable as u know the grid pattern of the wall should be straight. If you shoot flowers, not so noticeable...so keep this in mind. Resolution will always fall-off with the addition of secondary optics. However, if you limit the enlargement factor of the image, such as displaying the image at 4" wide on a PC screen max. the loss of resolution is acceptable. The greater you enlarge the image, the more you exploit the loss in resolution. So you have to accept this product for what it's capable of performing, vs. "expecting miracles."
Overall, for the small cost of this product (in the world of optics, this is dirt cheap), if you have a need to go wider or zoom in, and do NOT want to make full size display images... the bang for the buck is remarkable. OTOH, if you expect to display these images on a 4k tv and expect Image quality to be equal to that of images without the add-on optics, u will be very disappointed. This is a case of unrealistic expectations, prob. due to not understanding the complexity of optics.
I think the maker should explain this in more detail so users better understand what to expect with a product like this.
I gave this product 5 stars, cause, at this price, the quality of the product is superb and the performance at small display sizes is very good...and the fact the kit includes both Wide Angle and telephoto, its an incredible value. I am not comparing the results to a $10K wide angle Leica camera and lens. Hope this puts the product in perspective...
--- end note ---
The frame is amazing, it's very sturdy, easy to insert and also very firm. This get's this product on star as it has a Triop mount, which can be helpful. However, this product falls apart when you put this "Pro" series lens to the test. You don't even need to take a picture to note this is really bad... bad without any redemption. Just by looking through the glass you perceive the massive lack of sharpness around the edges, the massive fudging in clarity, the horrendous barrel distortion. The telephoto lens is no 4X telephoto lens, it's a public embarrassment for a kit that costs this much.
I cannot understand how Apple agreed to sell this kit in their own website. Once I opened the box, and I noticed how bad this was, I decided to take a picture, and upload it to Amazon so others are not misguided as I was.
Let me upload the pictures for you to be the judge (taken with Native Camera App, and no filters, no post processing of any kind other than cropping). Note that this crop is largely around the center of the lens. The difference in brightness is 100% caused by the diferent composition (the photo without exolens had brighter areas and thus metering was different).
Yes, even at the center, this lens fails miserably. I am sorry to bring this news, really. I wanted this to be at least passable, but it didn't happen.
The low score is primarily due to the quality of the lens. I also own some cheap Aunkey clip-on lens, and the quality is really similar (not really noticeable at all). There is slightly less distortion at the edges, but not much less.
Along with that, it is hard to align the camera lens with the frame lens. I have to make sure they are aligned right each time I use it.
Lastly, the telescoping lens is pretty useless. I've only used it a couple times, and prefer the fish-eye. The telescoping lens is really blurry, and low quality.
Just to clarify, these are NOT the Zeiss lens.
The drawbacks are not a surprise, I knew all this from other reviews going in, but bear mentioning:
• Slight chromatic aberration (You're going to have to spend a lot more money for better glass to eliminate this)
• Tripod shoe is a bit lacking in overall surface area, requiring a very tight mount screw to eliminate rotation
• You must remove your iPhone cover to use
If you are just starting out and want a very easy point of entry into lens experimentation with your iPhone, I would recommend this.
