Expanding Universe. Photographs from the Hubble Space Telescope Hardcover – Illustrated, May 4, 2015

4.8 out of 5 stars 612 ratings

With investigations into everything from black holes to exoplanets, the Hubble Telescope has changed not only the face of astronomy, but also our very sense of being in the universe. On the 25th anniversary of its launch into low-earth orbit, TASCHEN celebrates its most breathtaking deep space images both as scientific feats and as photographic masterpieces.

Ultra high resolution and taken with almost no background light, these pictures have answered some of the most compelling questions of time and space, while also revealing new mysteries, like the strange “dark energy” that sees the universe expanding at an ever-accelerated rate. Now, the precision of the telescope is matched with the precision of TASCHEN reproduction standards, allowing the images to mesmerize in their iridescent colors and vast, fragile forms.

The collection is accompanied by an essay from photography critic Owen Edwards and an interview with Zoltan Levay, who explains how the pictures are composed. Veteran Hubble astronauts Charles F. Bolden, Jr. and John Mace Grunsfeld also offer their insights on Hubble’s legacy and future space exploration.

“This is a coffee table book that will appeal to more than just space buffs. Jam-packed with breath-taking deep space images that are ultra-high resolution and taken with almost no background light. You’ll need to keep reminding yourself that they’re not photographic masterpieces but scientific feats that have helped answer some of the most compelling questions of time and space.” ―
Bespoke Magazine, Beirut

Beautiful book.
I wanted a coffee table book that looked beautiful but wasn't the same old book that nobody even opens. This is beautiful. Though I partially bought it for decor, I loved reading it and know others will too. Gorgeous pictures and interesting information.

Incredibly beautiful book. It's coffee table sized and I keep it lying out all the time.

I meant to buy a JTWS book and went down a click hole and found this book and didn’t look at it closely before buying. The pictures are Hubble quality and still amazing. Great coffee table book full of pictures. It was a little confusing with several languages included and not sure what was what but I get it. They didn’t have to do several printings.

I got this as a gift for someone else and now I’m gonna have to buy it again… because I’m not giving this away, it’s too beautiful!!!

It has some intro and good information, but it dives quickly into exactly what I wanted: gorgeous, high-definition pictures of the universe.

At first I was worried that I accidentally bought it in German, but it just has three languages (I just realized German isn’t one of the languages lol it’s English, Deutsch, and Francais).

Absolutely gorgeous. Definitely worth the money.

Sure, you can see these photos online, but sometimes it’s nice to have them within easy reach on a coffee table. Makes a nice gift - to help people better understand just how small and insignificant we are.?

Reviewed in Italy on August 2, 2016
