Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Since the extended family no longer lives nearby, new parents often turn to books for advice on child care. These two new sources, although different in format and scope, provide useful information to parents with young children. The first volume of The Disney Encyclopedia of Baby and Child Care covers development from birth through age six, describing milestones and explaining care techniques. Boxes highlight important information. There are also sections on basic first aid and the common symptoms of childhood diseases. Volume 2 is an alphabetically arranged encyclopedia of child health and illness issues, with short entries on conditions and behaviors (e.g., aggression, toeing in, worms). A referral list of relevant organizations is included. The authors are pediatricians who provide current, high-quality information, but the material provided is at a ready-reference level. Readers seeking depth will need other sources, and this set lacks a bibliography. The authors of the successful "What To Expect" series offer a volume on the second and third years of life. This book contains 900 pages of useful information divided into four sections. Like the Disney set, the first part concerns development, milestones, pediatric checkups, and parental concerns, but the authors add valuable material on what parents should know and what they should teach toddlers. Part 2 on health and safety covers general care, nutrition, home safety, first aid, toilet training, and caring for children with special needs. Part 3 offers important information on the toddler in the family, including issues such as sibling rivalry, parenting techniques, working parents, child care, adoption, divorce, and death?topics not discussed in the Disney work. Part 4 is a ready-reference source offering activity suggestions, recipes, home remedies, the symptoms and treatment of common illnesses, and forms for charting growth, health history, and memorable moments. This is an outstanding source written by and for parents. Easy to use, affordable, and reassuring, it encourages parents to enjoy their children. More illustrations and first aid information and a bibliography would have been useful, but What To Expect: The Toddler Years belongs in all parenting collections. The Disney Encyclopedia of Baby and Child Care is a good complementary source that provides additional medical information. Although less detailed than The Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons Complete Guide to Early Child Care (Crown, 1990), it is a useful ready-reference source.?Barbara M. Review

Parents of toddlers will find this a refreshingly well detailed, comprehensive presentation on what to expect during the second and third years of a child's life. From toilet training and tantrums to providing the proper learning experiences, parents receive insights on the child's mind at this age, and on how they can improve a child's learning curve. -- Midwest Book Review

totally outdated and wrong in breastfeeding advice

totally outdated and wrong in breastfeeding advice
I’ve educated myself a lot and some of the “recommendations” on this book are a bit concerning I would recommend taking it with a grain of salt and look for other sources of information. Just to name one thing the recommended breastfeeding time by the Actual experts its 2 years minimum with lots of extended benefits but the book recommends to whine at 1 year.

You can't go wrong with the "What to expect" books, I have found. I used the first one, "What to expect the first year," throughout my son's first year. It's such an awesome reference to have on hand. Although I haven't needed to use this one as much -- he gets sick less frequently now, whenever I do have an issue, such as a rash on his neck, or dry skin on his legs, or vaccine-related concerns, this is a great place to refer. It's also come in handy when I need help in the middle of the night and don't think it's necessarily an emergency per se.

This has is a treasure of information for new parents.
And as every child is different, its helpful even if your newborn is not your first.
There are helpful habits in there for you to develop as you handle different situations, so its good to read it early. I'd do it before they crawl.

It is a bit long so if you don't mind a long read this is for you. If you want something more condensed then you may want to look for something newer and more condensed.

This book is packed with awesome info! What we have found to be the most fun is when we had our second child and forgot that we owned this book, then found it and went back through comparing the milestones our child had hit to what the book says she may experience.

This is an enormously helpful guide to parenting your toddler, from feeding to safety to dealing with your own emotions in the face of an irrational toddler. The book is comprehensive in its month-by-month guide as well as the special sections on toilet training and other crucial topics. However, I am struck by the fact that this edition was completed before the Internet became the vast resource that it is today. This is not to say that the information provided here can be found as easily or in such a comprehensive manner on the Internet. It's just that there are numerous additional resources to be tapped on the Net and it would be helpful to sees references to those resources as part of the chapters or even specific sections. Also, as a mother of twins I am particularly sensitive to information (or lack thereof) on raising multiples. Yes, there are books out there especially geared to parenting multuples, but this book almost acts as if multiples don't exist. There was one tiny little section near the end, but that was it. With women having children later, there has been an enormous multiples baby boom. It would be nice of this book has more advice for those parents. For example, the book states "Never leave your toddler alone in the car for even a moment." This is completely unrealistic if you have multiples. Especially in your own driveway, you often need to leave one child alone (strapped into the car seat) for a moment while you bring the other into the house and put him in a safe area while you go get the other one. I would prefer that the book offered advice on how to handle these situations safely when you have multiples.

If you want a quick reference to clear your mind of some questions you might have about your toddler, this is your book, with a decent and straightforward approach to tricky and embarassing situations that our toddler may have, it still has that "casual" feeling of talking to your next door neighboor, it gives general ways to treat those issues, and its a guide to be a gentle loving parent, if you want a medical approach, this is not your book, but wouldn't be bad to have it in your library.

My son and daughter in law have (soon to be) 3 boys under 2 and 1/2 years old! I bought the what to expect books for all 3 ages for my daughter in law for Christmas! No young mom wants nagging advice, but most seek the knowledge to be the best mommies they can be, so I think she will love them!!

This is my go to book whenever I have questions. I skim it each month to see what the developmental milestones are. I love the way it is organized. I've always been able to find answers to my questions quickly. I have yet to come across a question this book doesn't answer. It is packed full of information.

when you are expectingも、知っていたら買っていたと思います。
