As thick as it gets, generous in size, unbelievably comfortable and extremely compact when packed, lightweight and warm. Innovative 3-D build for a flat sleeping surface from edge to edge. This synthetic filled mat also features our durable FlatValve technology and I-Beam baffle construction. The included smart Schnozzel Pump bag ensures quick and easy inflation without the risk of lung humidity reaching the insulation. The pump bag also doubles as waterproof compression bag.

The material is a nice tough fabric, has a little texture so it's not slippery. This mattress didn't slide on the floor of my tent and my sleeping bag didn't slide off during the night. This bag isn't silent, but it is pretty quiet. If you move around at night, it will be a quiet rustle but it wont sound like an army of balloon animals trying to escape an kids birthday party.
It's hard to tell when you first unroll the mattress that there is insulation inside. I used the included schnozzle bag to inflate...and there is a bit of a learning curve with it. After the first few failed attempts, I figured out the technique and found that the mattress should be fully inflated after about 6 good bags of air.
I left the mattress slightly under inflated so that when I was laying on it, it wasn't rock hard. As a side sleeper, this mattress conformed to my body and kept my shoulder and hip off the ground. The insulation makes this a very comfortable mattress. It wasn't a winter campout, so I can't comment yet on how well it insulates when the ground is frozen. However, I never felt any cold coming through the mattress at all.
all in all, fantastic!
First of all, for “12M” Amazon lists the size as 77.6”x30.3”x4.7” (sold by Backcountrry [BC]). That description is an error. That size described is for the wider “12MW” which costs about $10 more (and is not sold by Backcountry via Amazon). (The actual size of the 12M is 72”x20.5”x4.7”) If you intend to get the smaller size, then this BC purchase through Amazon is cheaper than REI and is a very good deal.
Secondly, while the interesting “Schnozzel Pumpbag” appears to do a good job of inflating the pad easily, it requires some extra space beyond the size of the pad. Sometimes I need to adjust the air in a pad during the night to make it a little softer, and letting air out would be OK but space would be a problem if I let out too much and needed to add some back. When filling the pad in an empty tent, where you have some room, there would probably not be a problem.
Keep in mind that if you want to return an item with Backcountry that is “used,” you can only do so for credit (within 30 days). A new item can be returned for a refund. Either way, you generally pay shipping. I did find BC’s customer service to be excellent when I wanted to return my new pad because the advertised size on Amazon was in error. The CS rep I talked with was quite nice, and due to the advertising error I was not charged return shipping.
