Tyler's score to "The Expendables 3" does provide some of those rousing tunes, but they are a bit more subdued this time. The score is built on what appears to be a synth core, but synth doesn't dominate it. It aids in providing that air of suspense and danger throughout the score, and that's something Tyler used very well here.
Those looking for the traditional Expendables theme won't find it as a standalone track here. Instead, it's weaved in with a couple of the other tracks and it works well. "Galgo's Entrance" is the shortest track running at 29 seconds and has a Spanish flare to it for obvious reasons. Despite that tracks short time, I really enjoyed. Part of it may have been due to the fact I really liked the character in the movie as well.
While the previous two Expendables scores (also done by Tyler) had an action movie vibe about them (and both of those were great scores), this one feels more suspenseful. It comes off as having more power, if you will, in most of the individual tracks than the previous. It certainly is a different take on The Expendables than what we've heard up to this point from Tyler.
That change, I think, is pretty nice. It brings something fresh, but retains enough of some of the earlier themes to associate it with The Expendables.Read more ›
On the one hand, I really can't complain because all the music is taken directly from the first two films and I love the music from those two films. On the other hand, literally all of the music is taken directly from the first two films!
Tracks 1,2,3,4 and 12 are all brand new songs and they are all very good, particularly Track 2 "Lament".
Literally every other track(5-11, 13-19) consists entirely of songs taken directly from the first two films.
I love it when they reuse music from the previous films in sequels, but this was a little too much.
In addition to hearing those old themes again, I was also looking forward to seeing what new themes Brian Tyler would come up with. In that regard, I was disappointed.
I'm a big fan of The Expendables. I'm also a big fan of Brian Tyler and I'm very excited for his return to The Fast And The Furious series next spring with Fast And Furious 7!(I'm also an absolute die-hard Fast and Furious fan!) I just hope for that movie, he learns to strike a balance between new and old themes. The Expendables 3 soundtrack could have used that.
