I first heard InsideOut, an a capella boy band, at a jazz festival in Idaho. I thought they were funny and phenomenally talented, but was pretty sure I'd never see or hear them again after the festival ended. So when I came across their album Innocence at a local bookstore some time later, I grabbed it and immediately became hooked on the songs. They seemed to be adept at whatever genre of music they tackled -- modern hits, choral numbers, original songs, and even parodies -- and their goofy sense of humor made the parody and light-hearted numbers all the more enjoyable.

So when I received their second album, "Experience," as a birthday present, I knew I was in for a treat. And I wasn't disappointed in the slightest.

One of the biggest strengths of InsideOut is that they're incredibly adept at mimicking the sounds of musical instruments, especially drums and cymbals. At some points you forget you're listening to an a capella album, and it can even come as a surprise to some people that no actual instruments were used in the making of the songs. The singers themselves are quite pleasant to listen to as well, a step above most of the generic boy bands out there and doing good jobs of mimicking sound effects and pop-culture voices such as Kermit the Frog and the Crocodile Hunter where appropriate. There's no future Josh Groban among the band, but they're still all good singers.

The songs themselves are quite fun as well. The original songs, such as "Dreamer," "Cruel Kindness," and "Cruel Kindness (Italian Reprise)," are beautifully written, and I wish they could get a little more mainstream exposure.

I heard these songs for the first time at a friend's place. They stuck in my head and I loved them! "Jackie Chan" and "The Stalking Song" are so much fun that just thinking about them makes me want to laugh. Their version of "Come Thou Fount" is probably my favorite of any group. I have bought this and their "Reverence" CD and am planning on adding a few others to my collection soon. One of the best a cappella groups ever.

This is the kind of album you come back to over and over and never get really tired of. The quality of their sound, their creativity and innovation, and the spectrum of fun and more somber repertoire keeps it worth coming back to. An album you'll want to keep and enjoy into old age, and your kids will like it too.
