From the Inside Flap

At one time, I owned a nine pound toy poodle named Kobie. Around the age of ten, Kobie was diagnosed with diabetes. This meant I needed to give him an insulin shot twice a day. Let me tell you, the dog did not like it one bit.
When he saw me going near where the needles were stored, he'd run upstairs, down the hall, and into the master bedroom, where he would tuck himself between the far side of the bed and the wall. Clearly, he was not interested in getting those injections!
Now, I could have said to Kobie,"Since you don't like this little buddy, I'm just going to stop. No more painful needles for you." But if he didn't get those shots twice a day, he would die. My only real choice was to give him pain so that he could live a healthy life.
Please understand. Kobie did not like the pain, and I did not like giving the pain, but in that pain was life. Similarly, God does not enjoying causing us pain, but in that pain is life.God's desire is to mold us and shape us and make us into the great and amazing creation He designed us to be
Right now, however, that creation is broken. For God to do any real healing, any real work of restoration, He needs to remove things--things maybe you like, things you don't want to give up, things that you have carried with you for years and years.
To make you into who He created you to be, He'll remove things you are placing your identity in--money, career, family, friends, gifts, talents, approval of others, etc. He will strip you of those things so that you will find your identity in Him.

He'll remove things you find temporary pleasure in because they are causing you long term harm. He'll remove the things you go to for comfort instead of Him. He'll remove whatever is necessary to mold you into the masterpiece He designed you to be.
The problem is that God starts all of this, and we say, "Whoa, hold on God! I wanted you to forgive my sins and save me from hell, not this. Enough God. This hurts! This is painful! I don't want any more!"
We work so hard to push away the pain, and all the while God is trying to use it to make us like Himself, to heal our lives, and to restore us to our original condition. Don't run and hide behind the bed. There is life in what God is doing!
